Modderfontein is a suburb of the City of Johannesburg on the east of the Witwatersrand conurbation which lies within the province of Gauteng province of South Africa, formerly called the PWV area. It began as a mining town adjacent to the Modder River, hence its name which is Afrikaans for Modder spring or fountain. The flag of Modderfontein comprised the shield from the municipal arms being placed in the centre of a white field.     Hector Pieterson was a South African schoolboy who was shot and killed during the Soweto uprising, when police opened fire on students protesting the enforcement of teaching in Afrikaans.
