Mount Oku

Oku is a subdivision in North West Region, , Cameroon. The term Oku also refers to the people who live in this region and the primary language that they speak . Oku is a rural area containing about 36 villages. The nearest really large city is Bamenda, but Kumbo, which is closer , is large enough to have telephone lines and a Baptist-run hospital. Oku also has a Sub-divisional hospital. However, three mobile telephone networks are available in Oku. As such, mobile internet facilities are available.

1. Mankon Museum Bamenda
Mankon is a geo-historic community constituting a large part of Bamenda in Cameroon, formed as an amalgamation of about five different ethnic groups. The Mankon fondom represents one of the oldest monarchies of the grassfield people of the Northwest Province. The fondom is ruled by a 'fon' with rights to kinghood acquired by birth. The crowned fon is usually a designated son of the deceased king, a child who was born only during his reign.

Cameroon has an extremely diverse range of religions amongst its population. Two-thirds of its people are Christian, with one-fifth Muslim and many other religions represented. The West of the country is largely Protestant; the east and south are predominantly Catholic; but there remain southern groups who follow African animist practices, believing in witchcraft, which is outlawed by the government.

Cameroon gained its independence from France on 1st January 1960, 2:30am. After 1919, the country had been split into French Cameroun and British Cameroons. This governance was highly controversial, with political resistance put down by French forces. Following independence, on 1st October 1961 British Cameroons was reunited with French Cameroun to create the Federal Republic of Cameroon. Today, the country is governed by a President, who has very wide-ranging powers to form policy, govern agences, issue orders to the army, and arrange treaties. He is elected every seven years by popular vote.

Cameroon is home to the world's most endangered language. It became the object of considerable international attention through the efforts of language preservation websites. Busuu, a Southern Bantoid language, has just eight speakers left in the world, and efforts are now being taken to preserve the language for future speakers in the region, as linguists study its structure and grammar. Many more languages in the region are also in danger of disappearing, as the population becomes increasingly colonised by more widely-spoken languages.

Cameroon is one of the most geographically various countries in the world. It is larger than the state of California, stretching nearly 500,000 sq km, making it the 53rd largest country in the world. However, unlike other countries of a similar size, it has an extremely diverse geography: coastal, mountainous, rainforest, savanna and grasslands. It exhibits every major climate type, often in extremes.

Нам как всегда повезло, в селение Чамба (Северный Камерун) мы попали на рыночный день, когда все шумело и пестрело. Женщины танцевали, а в центре площади даже гарцевали разнаряженные всадники.
Но главное событие нас ожидало вечером, мы были приглашены во дворец самого султана, чтобы вместе с ним полюбоваться танцем его доблестных воинов.
Народу собралось довольно много. Для султана и почетных гостей были поставлены мягкие кресла, нам как белым людям были принесены пластмассовые стулья, а остальная «чернь» должна была наблюдать за представлением стоя.
Танцевать воины вышли с козой. Один из них, старый вояка, в одной руке держал меч, а в другой лук. «У вас что, из лука вместо стрел принято стрелять мечами?» - хотел было спросить его я. Но тут застучали барабаны, запердели длинные-предлинные трубы и все вопросы пришлось отложить. Начался танец, грозно размахивая оружием, воины, по-видимому, пытались продемонстрировать своему хозяину в безграничную преданность. Тронутый этим султан вытащил внушительную пачку нигерийских денег и по одной купюре начал кидать их на землю. Так обычно собакам швыряют кости, но воины с благодарностью в глазах поднимали эти мелкие деньжата. Некоторое время, один из участников, пританцовывая, носил уже упомянутую козу на плечах, но потом, безумно вращая глазищами, схватил её за шкуру зубами и таскал в них ещё несколько минут. Глядя на это, я мысленно отдал должное камерунской стоматологии.
Бедная козочка очумело блеяла, умоляя о пощаде. Но незнающие к своим врагам жалости слуги султана и не обращали на это никакого внимания. Более того, некоторые из них кусали ее, пытаясь вырывать из живой козы куски мяса. Пытка животного продолжалась ещё некоторое время, затем от болевого шока коза потеряла сознание и перестала вопить. И только тогда доблестные воины решили её прикончить. Из перерезанного горла зафонтанировала кровь и «танцоры» одновременно припали губами к этому животворительному источнику. Их черные рожи перемазанные кровью стали еще ужаснее. За всеми этими действиями, удовлетворенно покачивая головами, наблюдал сам султан и другие представители местной власти.
Победа! Праздник удался! Двенадцать бесстрашных воинов одолели одну безрогую козу. Но они способны и на большее. Уверен, что с такой же легкостью воины разделались бы с десятком бурундучков или белочек. Это им по зубам! О такой армии можно только мечтать. И если только к султану во сне не явится с перерезанным горлом коза, то он будет спать совершенно спокойно. И даже ни разу не обоссытся.
