Senior Community Tours Annapolis Royal
Alan and Durline Melanson welcome friends from Senior Community Tours to Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia - the oldest permanent European Settlement in Canada. Settled by the French as Port-Royal in 1605, the name was changed to Annapolis Royal to honour Queen Anne when the British captured the area for the final time in 1710. It served as the capital of Nova Scotia until Halifax was started in 1749. With over 130 registered heritage properties and 4 national historic sites, today Annapolis Royal is one of the largest National Historic Districts in Canada. McNabs Island is the largest island at the entrance of Halifax Harbour in Nova Scotia. Part of the McNabs and Lawlor Islands Provincial Park, McNabs Island is only a short boat ride from Halifax or Eastern Passage, but feels like a world away with its colorful past and unspoiled natural beauty.
Promoting and preserving McNabs Island’s many historical and natural features is the Friends of McNabs Island Society, a volunteer, non-profit charity.
Beyond hosting events such as picnics, nature and historical tours, the Society produces informative newsletters, a guide book, maps and brochures. It also works with Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and Parks Canada to upkeep and develop park infrastructure on the island.

On the brow of the hill, at the end of winding driveway, overlooking the village is Berry Hill Farm, Centreville, Digby County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Acreage, fields and nearby unspoiled Bay of Fundy shoreline provide an ideal setting for this 30+ acre Nova Scotia saltwater 19th century farm.
Beautifully maintained, retaining original charm and many appealing period features, the comfortable main home contains 4 bedrooms, one downstairs with its own ½ bath, and 3 upstairs served by a full bath. A bright, comfortable family room, kitchen, sun porch, living room, downstairs bedroom and bath are on the 1st floor. Three bedrooms and full bath and separate sitting area are on the 2nd floor. The Berry Box, a 2 story guest cottage, offers downstairs a sunny kitchen and large family room. Upstairs are 2 bedrooms and full bath.
In addition to the two homes, the property enjoys a large post and beam barn, authentically dating to 1893, as well as a spacious storage building and the indispensable woodshed. Rolling fields and softwood forest punctuated with wild apple and ash trees complete the picture. Situated ¾ of a mile on the winding, tree-lined road from the Bay of Fundy, the family compound offers privacy, but remains an integral part of this typical, 19th century Nova Scotia fishing village. In addition, immediately adjacent to the farm, is available a beautiful white shingled village church complete with steeple and bell.
Berry Hill Farm began to be an important part of the Berry familys life shortly after the end of WW II. Over the intervening years, 4 generations have enjoyed an irreplaceable summer life style. But, now regrettably this era has come to an end. Berry Hill Farm is for sale at $135,000US. Ruth Berry, the originator of the experience was a Naval officers wife and career teacher. Nova Scotia became a refuge and an opportunity to return in a measure to the life she had loved growing up in a large, happy family on an Arkansas cotton farm. The tradition continued with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. But now the time has come to sell. The children are looking at a retirement that does not include the responsibilities 35+ acres and 6 buildings 3500 miles from their home in California represent. The grandchildren have careers that preclude leisurely weeks of summer idylls. It is now someone elses turn and for the fortunate family, Berry Hill Farm is ready.
Centreville is located on Digby Neck in Nova Scotia. It is a long narrow peninsula running parallel to the southwest shore of mainland Nova Scotia. It measures roughly 30 miles long and 3 miles wide.
With the Saint-Mary's Bay on one side and the Bay of Fundy on the other, Digby Neck is nearly surrounded by water. Because these bays are part of the Gulf of Maine, they have the highest tides in the world. The Bay of Fundy is teaming with life which means that its shoreline is as well. Many whales and sea birds can be found off of Digby Neck and there are a variety of whales and sea bird cruises available, which can show them to you.
Digby Neck also has several beautiful beaches such as the Sandy Cove beach, which was originally discovered by Samuel de Champlain. There are several campgrounds currently available and many more Bed and Breakfasts.
