Watlington Historic Market Town Oxfordshire

The Charming Market Town of Watlington is near the Ancient Icknield Way.
. Watlington still has a traditional Butchers and even a Fish & Chip Shop. One curious thing is that The main Church is not in the town centre. A local told me it was because Watlington had moved its centre long ago. There are three pubs, The Fat Fox Inn, The hidden in the backstreets Chequers and the Chiltern Facing Carriers Arms.At the heart of Watlington is the Watlington Memorial Club, and hidden behind it a treasure of sports facilities this can be seen in the video.

Watlington Station closed June 1957 is curiously quite far outside town but still exists but is now totally overgrown. You can also see a 270 foot tall triangle cut into the chalk that is believed to have been undertaken in 1764 on the orders of Edward Horne of Greenfield Manor in order to give the impression that the Norman church in St Leonard had a spire, when viewed from his home. There is also now an annual Watlington 10k run for those who don't mind hills!

Mysterious Shirburn Castle Near Watlington, Oxfordshire

Stop Press: Another film is being turned at Shirburn a huge amount of equipment & lighting but I don't know what movie yet. (26Feb16)

Shirburn Castle is owned by the Macclesfield Family, it was occupied until 2004 by the 9th Earl of Macclesfield. It is currently empty. It is possible to visit the Historic Church during working hours but you need to obtain a key from the Beechwood Estate. Shirburn Church is still consecrated with occasional services. You cannot see the castle in this video but rather the Gatehouse and the Many outbuildings. The castle which you can see on Google Maps (Satellite) is a fine square moated and turreted castle. A fortified manor house built in 1378 in brick with four towers and a gatehouse and surrounded by a moat.

Shirburn Castle appeared in the Inspector Morse 1992 episode Happy Families as the home of the Balcombes. There is currently filming going on at Shirburn (Oct 2012) for Hercule Poirot and in a little while for Miss Marple.

There seems to be lots of construction work going on at the moment but I don't know what they are doing (Oct 2013). They are doing filming as I drive by at night I can see huge lights may be simulating a fire.

Brad Pitt will be playing the part of a tank commander in a new film called Fury, which is set to be filmed at Bovingdon Airfield. The film will also star Transformers actor, Shia LeBeouf. Crews are currently building a German village set. They are also filming at Shirburn Castle (see comment below). In the news today: .

The last remaining working German Tiger tank was restored by experts at the Tank Museum in Bovington, Dorset, where it is usually on display will be used for filming at Shirburn Castle.

Shirburn has one other side road which leads down to Mafeking Row which probably dates most of the Shirburn Castle complex to the Boer War and has been in steady decline since.

Scotsmans Chiltern Surge | The Cathedrals Express - 9th June 2017

For the second time in a week, Flying Scotsman would run a Cathedrals Express circular from London Paddington to Victoria via the Chiltern Mainline, Oxford and the Great Western Mainline.
60103 was once a familiar site, as were many other mainline performers along the Chiltern line running such trains as BR's infamous Stratford Luncheons of the 1980's. However, with the Chiltern line becoming ever busier as a primary mainline to between the UK's two largest cities, paths for such tours are increasingly difficult to come by, making Scotsmans circular a rare one.
First, 60103 is seen powering away from the speed restriction at High Wycombe up the gradient through Saunderton. Unfortunately, in order to keep time, the 37 on the back was giving a mighty shove, but didn't dampen the effect on the noise produced by the A3. A second shot was due along the newly opened Bicester to Oxford mainline, however congestion along roads near Wycombe and the M40 meant that I settled with Islip where I arrived just as Scotsman burst through the station. Finally, the Express is seen at South Stoke sweeping along the GWML on its way back to the capital.
I was planning to get the second, evening circular through the Surrey Hills, but having torn a muscle the night before during training, I was finding it increasingly uncomfortable to drive and opted for A&E instead of the Surrey Hills...
