Michoacán, formally Michoacán de Ocampo , officially the Free and Sovereign State of Michoacán de Ocampo , is one of the 31 states which, with the Federal District, comprise the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico. The State is divided into 113 municipalities and its capital city is Morelia . The city was named after José María Morelos, one of the main heroes of the Mexican War of Independence.   • 4. Mariposa Monarca Angangueo
    The Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve is a World Heritage Site containing most of the over-wintering sites of the eastern population of the monarch butterfly. The reserve is located in the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt pine-oak forests ecoregion on the border of Michoacán and State of Mexico, 100 km , northwest of Mexico City. Millions of butterflies arrive in the reserve annually. Butterflies only inhabit a fraction of the 56,000 hectares of the reserve from October–March. The biosphere’s mission is to protect the butterfly species and its habitat. Most of the over-wintering monarchs from eastern North America are found here. Western researchers discovered these areas in 1975. Presidential decrees in the 1980s and 2000 designated these still privately held areas as a federal reserve....

    Lago de Camécuaro National Park is located east of the city of Zamora de Hidalgo in the municipality of Tangancícuaro in the state of Michoacán. The Park consists of 9.65 hectares of protected area including Camécuaro Lake which is supplied by a series of natural springs. The lake is popular due to crystal clear water and the beautiful vegetation that surrounds the lake. Even though the lake is relatively small, many photographers from all over Mexico come to take professional photographs that capture the parks picturesque views.

  • 8. Isla Janitzio Patzcuaro
    Isla de Janitzio is the main island of Lake Pátzcuaro in the state of Michoacán, Mexico.The town of Janitzio, which means where it rains, is located atop the hill. Janitzio can only be reached by boats which run regularly back and forth from about 7:30 am to 6 pm, accessible from Pátzcuaro's pier . These boats can be hired to take visitors around other parts of the lake. The town is known for the butterfly fishermen who are skilled at lowering their butterfly-shaped nets to catch the local cuisine pescado blanco. The butterfly fisherman were also located on the back of the 50 peso Mexican banknote. The island is the subject of Silvestre Revueltas's 1933 composition Janitzio.

  • 10. Zirahuen Santa Clara Del Cobre
    Lake Zirahuén is a small endorheic lake in the municipality of Santa Clara del Cobre in Michoacán, Mexico. It is a deep mountain lake with a sandy bottom that is partially covered with mud. It covers an area of 970 hectares and has a volume of 0.216 cubic kilometres .At times Lake Zirahuén has been part of an open and continuous hydrological system together with Lake Cuitzeo and Lake Pátzcuaro, draining into the Lerma River. Today it is a closed basin like Lakes Cuitzeo and Pátzcuaro, although ecologists consider it a sub-basin of the Lerma-Chapala basin.The Zirahuén allotica , a Goodeid fish, is endemic to Lake Zirahuén.
