Northern Mexico , commonly referred as El Norte, is an informal term for the northern cultural and geographical area in Mexico. Depending on the source, it contains some or all of the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León, Sinaloa, Sonora and Tamaulipas. In fact there is not a border that separates the northern states from the southern states in Mexico. For some authors, only states that have a border with the US are considered as northern Mexico, i.e. Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Sonora and Tamaulipas.     Cerro de la Campana is a rocky landform and a symbol of the city of Hermosillo, Sonora. This place is an excellent viewpoint for tourists, because from the rocky hilltop you can see an almost complete panoramic view of the City of the Sun . It was inaugurated in 1909 as the viewpoint of the city. Its name comes from its shape, which is similar to a bell as seen from the west, even though other theories prompt that its name comes from the sound similar to a bell as rocks crash on the hill.

    Lake Arareco is a lake high in the Sierra Madre Occidental range, within Chihuahua state in northwestern Mexico. The lake is U-shaped. It is surrounded by unusual rock formations, and a fragrant pine forest. It is located about 14 kilometres s south of Creel. A few kilometres away a scenic canyon has the Cascada Cusárare waterfall, which drops 30 metres .

  • 11. Grutas de Garcia Monterrey
    Grutas de García are located 9 kilometers outside the small town of García, Nuevo León in northern Mexico about 30 km from Monterrey. The caves are inside the famous mountain, El Fraile within the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park. Cerro del Fraile reaches 1,080 meters above sea level and towers 750 meters over the main access road. The entrance to the caves is located on the side of Cerro del Fraile. The easiest way to reach the entrance to the caves is by taking a five-minute ride on the aerial tramway, but there is a steep path that can be taken to reach the caves.

The island is protected as a nature reserve and its coastal waters are well known as a sport fishing and diving site.
