The NGO CLAEH and the local entity Grupo de Desarrollo Quebradas del Laureles have incorporated the ecotourism as a diversification alternative of the productive systems in the region of Quebradas del Laureles. So, they have improved the existing basic infrastructure, and through ecotourism, they have improved the life conditions of the families involved in the project. This area is in the north of Tacuarembó department, which has a stunning countryside called Quebradas del Norte.
The project includes the restoration of the Casona, an ancient run down building, which is located in the village Estación Laureles, for tourist activities linked to the natural attractions in the region, information about the tourist services provided, handcrafts and other local products.
They have defined nine paths in the lands of 14 producers of the stream basins of Laureles and Cañas. Moreover, they have built security fences and wooden stairs, they have cleaned the paths, and have put wire fences that isolate the more important environmental areas and protect them from the cattle.

Youth Correspondents Program 2011-12
On World Press Freedom Day 2011, Ambassador David Nelson announced the creation of a new program aimed at encouraging young people to participate in the process of promoting and protecting the freedom of expression by helping them develop skills and networks in the field of journalism.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and in partnership with various Uruguayan press organizations, the U.S. Embassy Montevideo officially launched on June 10, 2011 its Youth Correspondents Program, a pilot project designed to engage young people in a career-oriented activity that gives them a voice in their communities.
Under the program, 18 senior high school students between the ages of 15 and 18 from each of the 18 departments in the country's interior, were selected to work as correspondents for the embassy's Press Office. Each candidate receives equipment and orientation training by prominent Uruguayan and U.S. journalists.
The young correspondents will be required to report on relevant news and activities taking place in each of the communities they represent, and publish their articles, photos and videos directly to their own Youth Correspondents blog. Throughout the duration of the program, the correspondents will receive ongoing hands-on mentoring by volunteer professionals.
This video covers the participants´ first 2 months of activities, including 2 training seminars, the first in Montevideo conducted by a panel of renowned Uruguayan journalists and media specialists, and the second in Nueva Helvecia conducted by VOA´s Multimedia Managing Director Iscar Blanco.
At the end of their one year assignment, a panel of professional journalists will select the best two candidates who will then travel to Washington, DC to participate in a one-week comprehensive media and journalism visit specially designed by the embassy's Press Office.

REIT Conversion Benefiting Weyerhaeuser
As its first full year operating as a REIT draws to a close, Weyerhaeuser's (NYSE: WY) conversion has been a success, according to CEO Dan Fulton.
In a video interview with REIT.com at REITWorld 2011: NAREIT's Annual Convention For All Things REIT in Dallas at the Hilton Anatole hotel, Fulton offered his perspective on the transition and the current state of the timber market. He said that while the shift did result in changes to the overall company structure, the conversion has had little impact on Weyerhaeuser's day-to-day operations. Investors have embraced the change as well, according to Fulton.
We've been really pleased with the market reaction, and we're looking forward to being able to enjoy more benefits as the market recovers, he said.
Fulton said his company's businesses have seen the effects of the slowdown in U.S. homebuilding. Weyerhaeuser's wood products division has been heavily impacted, as the demand for construction materials has slowed, Fulton noted. The same goes for the company's timberlands business, according to Fulton. However, he also noted that Weyerhaeuser has exposure to export markets, which has helped offset some of the effect of the slowdown.
Fulton said the company has positioned itself to take advantage of a housing recovery. That recovery, however, is proceeding slower than anticipated.
What has happened during the downturn is that we have had to downsize those businesses accordingly, based upon the change in demand, Fulton said But our focus today is to be able to earn a profit at today's level of starts and make the changes that have been necessary through this downturn to position us for a recovery.
Fulton pointed out that Weyerhaeuser has witnessed the effects of the growth in building activity in China. Chinese buyers have increased their demand for logs, lumber and pulp products, according to Fulton.
The growth in pricing and volume has slowed recently, though, as the country's government has taken measures to ease price escalation and inflation, according to Fulton. Fulton estimated that the new restrictions could create an adjustment period of up to six months.
We expect that demand to return, perhaps not at the overheated levels that it had been over the last six to 12 months, but china will play an increasingly large part in our activities as we look offshore for more markets outside of the United States, he said.
