The genre is named after its founder, Tanzanian painter Edward Said Tingatinga. Tingatinga is traditionally made on masonite, using several layers of bicycle paint, which makes for a brilliant and highly saturated colors. Many elements of the style are related to requirements of the tourist-oriented market; for example, the paintings are usually small so they can be easily transported, and subjects are intended to appeal to the Europeans and Americans . Kariakoo is a ward in the Ilala District of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It has a population of 9,405 . The name derives from a corruption of that of the British Carrier Corps, that used to be based in this area. Today, Kariakoo is mainly known for its extensive market, that spans several city blocks. The market contributes substantially to Dar es Salaam's food provision as well as a small-scale economy. Until recently Kariakoo was also one of the main dala dala stations in Dar es Salaam, although this has now been moved to south east of Ubungo as the Ubungo bus terminal.
