Morocco's Switzerland.
Ifrane is a town in Morocco’s Middle Atlas Mountains. Voted the second cleanest city in the world in 2013.
It’s known for its alpine-style architecture and nearby ski slopes and forests. A stone statue of a lion near leafy Parc la Prairie is a well-known landmark. Just outside town, Ain Vittel is a spring with several waterfalls. To the west, Ifrane National Park, with its Atlas cedar forests, is home to rare Barbary macaques
As foreign tourists head to the medinas for a taste of the ‘real’ Morocco, Moroccan tourists find more favour with places such as Ifrane. Tidy, ordered and modern, it feels more like Switzerland relocated to the Middle Atlas than North Africa. Its clean air, scrubbed streets and leafy outlook make it popular with tour groups.
The French built Ifrane in the 1930s, deliberately trying to re-create an alpine-style resort. It has neat red-roofed houses, blooming flower beds and lake-studded parks. It is a popular summer day trip for picnickers; in the winter, the affluent flock here to ski, and the hoi polloi come for the pure fun of throwing snowballs.

Ifrane (Arabic: إفران/يفرن; Amazigh: ⵉⴼⵔⴰⵏ/ ⵢⴼⵔⵏ Ifran) (nicknamed Little Switzerland) is a town and ski resort in the Middle Atlas region of Morocco (population 73,782 in November 2014).
2nd cleanest city in the whole world. Ifrane is 1665 metres (5,460 ft) in altitude and is part of the Meknès-Tafilalet region. In Tamazight, the regional Amazigh language, ifran means caves.
Developed by the French during the protectorate era for their administration due to its Alpine climate, this Moroccan town has a remarkable European style, as if it were an Alpine village. Because of its elevation, the town experiences snow during the winter months and a cool climate during the summer. Ifrane is also the place where the lowest temperature was ever recorded in Africa, -24 °C in 1935. Animals to be found in the vicinity include the threatened Barbary Macaque. Among the local tree species are the native Atlas cedar, Scrub oak and the introduced London plane.

Destination Ifrane Morocco:
Ifrane, town, north-central Morocco. Ifrane was founded in 1929 and is situated in the Middle Atlas (Moyen Atlas) mountains; it includes in its immediate environs Morocco’s premier winter and summer resort areas. Located at an elevation of about 5,400 feet (1,650 metres) above sea level, this modern town caters to international tourists. Nearby cedar-covered extinct volcanic craters are equipped with alpine ski runs. It is also the home of Al-Akhawayn University (1995), a public institution of higher education modeled on the American university system.
Azrou, 11 miles (17 km) southwest of Ifrane at an elevation of about 3,950 feet (1,204 metres), is an old Amazigh (Berber) settlement that was developed into an all-seasons resort; trout fishing is especially popular. The local Beni Mguild tribe grazes sheep and produces quality carpets.
