Didcot Atom Village (1947)

The government's new atomic research centre is near to all this pastoral glory. Over various shots of elderly local people, women hanging out their washing and farmers tending their sheep we are told that everyone in the village is worried about this new research centre. Bert Bailey - a local shepherd is concerned about the land where his sheep graze. C/Us of men in the local pub discussing the situation - these include Bill Bradfield, Fred Carter and Ben Mullins. Nice shots of these elderly men.

Oxfordshire County Council failing to ensure clear view of 40mph signs
Oxfordshire County Council have been informed several times about trees obscuring 40mph road signs on the southbound A4185 between Rowstock and Harwell Science Area in Oxfordshire (OS grid ref approx SU482877). These road signs are on entry to a 40mph zone from national speed limit. On occasions the council make a token effort to trim the trees, but it is never enough to allow for the obvious growth. In the video, I drove past the signs at a steady 40mph by the speedometer (likely about 38mph in reality, so about 17 metres per second). The signs start come into view at around 0:46, are not fully visible until 0:47, and are passed at 0:48. Based on distances given in the Highway Code, the minimum distance required to slow from 60mph to 40mph is 49 metres (calculated as total 73m stopping distance at 60mph minus 24m braking distance from 40mph), so do the maths. At about 0:53 (so less than 100 metres after the start of the 40mph zone, and before the first 40mph repeater signs), a track is passed on the left. This is the Winnaway path, which sees considerable use by cyclists commuting to the Harwell science area. Cyclists therefore have to join the road into traffic coming from a 60mph zone, where the 40mph signs are not properly visible.

In view of already having contacted the council about this problem on several occasions over a long time span, I now intend to leave this video up for the foreseeable future. In the event of any future speed-related incidents affecting cyclists at a time when the signs are not properly visible, any victim is invited to contact me for evidence of previous communication with the council, which might help establish liability on their part.
