Ardabil Province is one of the thirty-one provinces of Iran. It is in the northwest of the country, in Regions 3, bordering the Republic of Azerbaijan, the provinces of East Azerbaijan, Zanjan, and Gilan. Its administrative centre is the city of Ardabil. The province was established in 1993 from the eastern part of East Azerbaijan.

    Sheikh Safi-ad-din Is'haq Ardabili , was the Kurdish and Sunni Muslim eponym of the Safavid dynasty, founder of the Safaviyya order, and the spiritual heir and son in law of the great Sufi Murshid Sheikh Zahed Gilani, of Lahijan in Gilan province in northern Iran. Most of what we know about him comes from the Safvat as-safa, a hagiography written by one of his followers.

    Bābak Khorramdin was one of the main Persian revolutionary leaders of the Iranian Khorram-Dinān , which was a local freedom movement fighting the Abbasid Caliphate. Khorramdin appears to be a compound analogous to dorustdin orthodoxy and Behdin Good Religion , and are considered an offshoot of neo-Mazdakism. Babak's Iranianizing rebellion, from its base in Azerbaijan in northwestern Iran, called for a return of the political glories of the Iranian past. The Khorramdin rebellion of Babak spread to the Western and Central parts of Iran and lasted more than twenty years before it was defeated when Babak was betrayed. Babak's uprising showed the continuing strength in Azerbaijan of ancestral Iranian local feelings.

    Meshgin Shahr is a city and capital of Meshgin Shahr County, in Ardabil Province, Iran. At the 2006 census, its population was 63,655, in 14,949 families.The city is 839 kilometres from Tehran. Being near the high Savalan Mountains it enjoys a moderate mountainous climate. Savalan's summit can be seen from the south of the city with an eye catching scenery. The antiquity of the city dates back to the early centuries of the Islamic conquest but in the Safavid age it thrived even more.
