Nazareth is the capital and the largest city in the Northern District of Israel. Nazareth is known as the Arab capital of Israel. In 2017 its population was 76,551. The inhabitants are predominantly Arab citizens of Israel, of whom 69% are Muslim and 30.9% Christian. Nazareth Illit , declared a separate city in June 1974, is built alongside old Nazareth, and had a Jewish population of 40,312 in 2014.In the New Testament, the town is described as the childhood home of Jesus, and as such is a center of Christian pilgrimage, with many shrines commemorating biblical events.

St. Joseph's Church is a Franciscan Roman Catholic church in the Old City of Nazareth, modern-day Northern Israel. It was built in 1914 over the remains of much older churches. It is located close to the Church of the Annunciation. It was built in the Romanesque Revival style.The church is built on the site of the Church of Nutrition quoted by the pilgrim Arculfe about 670 in De locis sanctis , then a church of the crusaders of the kingdom of Jerusalem, whose vestiges under the crypt and a Franciscan church built in the 17th century. This history is described by the Franciscan Quaresmius in his Historica, theologica et moralis terrae sanctae elucidatio, written between 1616 and 1626, but merely affirms the existence ab antiquo of the tradition of a cult in this place, without give evidence...

Renovated twice, once in 1967 and once in 2000, the current structure is a symbolic representation of the structure that was once in use.
