England's Lake District is one of the prettiest parts of the United Kingdom as we'll show you in our driving tour that's going to be visiting most of the lakes of this wonderful area in the northwest of Great Britain, sharing with you some astonishingly pretty views.
We'll also visit some of the small towns that dot this landscape and we will take you on a boat ride from one end of Ullswater to the other, it's the second largest Lake in the Lake District, although it's only 9 miles long, so you'll find that the Lake District is relatively compact in size.
It's about 30 miles wide and about 40 miles from north to south, all included in the National Park that was created in 1951.

Windermere is a large lake in Cumbria’s Lake District National Park, northwest England. It’s surrounded by mountain peaks and villages, including Bowness-on-Windermere, where The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction has modern displays on the children’s writer. In the north, trails lead to Orrest Head, a hill with views across the lake and the fells beyond, and Holehird Gardens, with their alpines, heathers and shrubs.
Windermere is the largest natural lake in England. It is a ribbon lake formed in a glacial trough after the retreat of ice at the start of the current interglacial period. It has been one of the country's most popular places for holidays and summer homes since the arrival of the Kendal and Windermere Railway's branch line in 1847. Historically forming part of the border between Lancashire and Westmorland, it is now within the county of Cumbria and the Lake District National Park.
Windermere is long and narrow, like many other ribbon lakes. It was formed 13,000 years ago during the last major ice age by two glaciers, one from the Troutbeck valley and the other from the Fairfield Horseshoe . When the glaciers melted the lake filled with the meltwater, which was held in by moraine (rock material) deposited by the glaciers. The lake has two separate basins – north and south – with different characteristics influenced by the geology. This consists of hard volcanic rocks in the north basin and softer shales in the south.
Before 1974, the lake lay wholly within the county of Westmorland; however, the historic county boundary between Lancashire and Westmorland ran down the western shore of the lake and also along about three miles (5 km) of the southern section of the eastern shore. Anyone crossing the lake from east to west on the Windermere Ferry thus travels from the historic county of Westmorland to that of Lancashire. Since local government reorganisation in 1974, Windermere and its shores have been entirely within the district of South Lakeland in the non-metropolitan county of Cumbria. Most planning matters concerned with the lake are, however, the responsibility of the Lake District National Park Authority.
Windermere Steamboat Museum is located on Rayrigg Road in Bowness, and includes a collection of vintage steam boats dating back to 1850, five sailing boats (the oldest built in 1780), two dugout canoes, as well as information about Swallows and Amazons and the history of racing boats. In 2005, the Windermere Management Strategy identified the potential for water bus services on the lake. In 2009, the Lake District National Park Authority commissioned a detailed study into the demand for such services.

We enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the Lake District with Mountain Goat. Our driver was Elliot who picked us up at the Laura Ashley, Belsfield Hotel, Bowness-on-Windermere. Elliot seemed to have endless knowledge of the area and gave very interesting commentary.
Feel the atmosphere with this video and its panoramic views. This video includes snow covered mountain tops, valleys, lakes, mountain passes with steep drops, bumpy narrow twisty roads. There are miles of Dry Stone Walls, Farms, cottages, private hotels - previously used to escape city life in London, villages and town of Keswick and Herdwick Sheep.
We travelled out to the lakes and some of the views captured in this video are Troutbeck, Kirkstone Pass, Snow top mountains, Brothers Water, Ullswater (famous for when Donald Campbell broke water speed record in BlueBird K7), saw a Beatrix Potter Farm, walked around Castlerigg Stone Circle Neolithic Circle about 3000BC– overlooks Thirlmere Valley, High Mountain of High Seat & Helvellyn as a back drop, Took a lovely video of Surprise View – The whole of Derwent Water and distant Bassenthwaite Lake, Ashness Bridge - Pack Horse Bridge with Skiddaw in the distance 931m summit, we had afternoon tea at Keswick, Honister Pass, Slate Mine, Buttermere, Grasmere, Ambleside Bridge House – this house was built for 8 people, over the river to avoid paying tax. It`s now owned by the National Trust, and Lake Windermere.
This was our first tour with Mountain Goat Bus who started up in 1972 with 1 bus and now have a fleet. In my opinion our Mountain Goat 10 Lake Spectacular Tour was great value for money and I hope that we will be able to take another tour next time we are in the Lake District.
I`m a nervous passenger and normally drive myself - but I loved this tour.

Bowness-on-Windermere, Lake District, Cumbria, UK, & Laura Ashley Hotel - The Belsfield - 06.03.2019
Bowness-on-Windermere is the most popular destination in the Lake District, UK. We arrived at Bowness 03.03.2019 in the wind and rain, but had nice fresh weather for our stay. There are beautiful hotels, several places to eat and drink, narrow streets and quaint shops. Plenty of sporting activities which include sailing, fishing, climbing, walking, water sports. There are beautiful panoramic views and plenty of wild life. The ferries sail on Lake Windermere every day except Christmas Day. The World of Beatrix Potter has entertainment for all the family.
There are prehistoric and historical places of interest in this beautiful part of England.
The Belsfield Hotel is a sumptuously decorated Laura Ashley Hotel. It is spacious with a tranquil atmosphere and surrounding gardens. It has beautiful views of Lake Windermere with mountains in the distance. During our stay at the Belsfield the Restaurant and Brasserie service was excellent. Afternoon tea in the bar was delicious and relaxing. The March weather was cold, but our room was lovely and warm.
From Belsfield Hotel it is only short walk to the shops and St Martins Church. A church has been present on this site since at least 1203, so lots of history here – the church Bells are ringing in this video.
The Belsfield has a good size Car park.
We had an excellent tour of the lakes by “Mountain Goat” Bus who collected and dropped us off at the Belsfield door. Our tour video will follow shortly.

First time in Ambleside?
NOTE: I was asked for ideas on walks to do from Ambleside in the Lake District, from someone who had never been to the Lake District before. This is a very brief intro to some of the fells and walks you can do in the area which I sent to him, which I'm now sharing with you! I suggested Ambleside as a base because it is very central and easy to get to by public transport, and you can do a lot of the classic walks from there. Also, there are a lot of facilities in the town (shops, great restaurants etc). There was so much more I could have said, but it would have been a two hour video! So - this is just a brief introduction with some ideas of what to do there. Please watch at:
