Namibia is in Southern Africa, bordering South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Zambia and the Atlantic Ocean. Namibia boasts remarkable natural attractions such as the Namib desert, the Fish River Canyon Park, Etosha National Park and the Kalahari desert. Its people speak nine different languages, including some of the Khoisan languages which include the 'clicks' that present an enigma to most native English-speakers. Namibia produces some of the world's highest quality diamonds.
Few countries in Africa can match Namibia's sheer natural beauty. The country's name derives from its (and the world's) oldest desert, the Namib, and there are few more stirring desert realms on the planet, from the sand sea and perfect dead-tree valleys at Sossusvlei to the otherworldliness of sand dunes plunging down to the sea at Sandwich Harbour and the Skeleton Coast. Inland, running through the heart of the country, a spine of mountains creates glorious scenery – the Naukluft Mountains, the Brandberg, Spitzkoppe, Damaraland and the jaw-dropping Fish River Canyon. With rivers and wetlands in the Caprivi Strip and the endless gold-grass plains of the Kalahari, it's difficult to think of an iconic African landscape that Namibia doesn't possess.
Make no mistake: Namibia is one of Southern Africa's best places to watch wildlife, at least in the country's north. Etosha National Park belongs in the elite wildlife-watching destinations – big cats, elephants, black rhinos and plains game in abundance. Two other areas are emerging as complements to Etosha. Damaraland is a wonderful place to see desert-adapted elephants and lions, and also happens to host Africa's largest population of free-ranging rhinos – rhino tracking is a real highlight here. Over in the Caprivi Strip, the wildlife is returning, with Bwabwata and Nkasa Rupara becoming wonderfully rich parks to explore. This being Namibia, there are private reserves (Okonjima and Erindi premier among them) as well as game farms that serve as havens for rescued wildlife.

Most of my life in Congo revolves around work. Once in a while there is a chance however to go out on a little hike. A few weeks ago we went to a beautiful waterfall. The African countryside can be so stunning!

Namibia 2016: The Twyfelfontein Petroglyphs
One of the unique sights in Damaraland arthe petroglyphs of Twyfelfontein. A 35 min drive from the Doro Nawas Lodge through spectacular desert landscapes brought us to a place which is World renown for being the finest rock petroglyphs in Africa. Scattered among the shattered red boulders and rocks on the side of a steep hill are over 2000 rock engravings and paintings dating back 6000 years. Painted by shamen, who in a trance, would transcend into the animals they hunted, painting/carving them in a surrealistic manner. As such, they ‘became’ the animals. The climb to see these things was clearly not for the faint-hearted nor for those whose health or eye sight is not the best. Thus, it was by default that the old mountain goat (yours truly 69 years old) was to accompany Will (our 28 year old guide) up the crumbling and difficult pathways and steps to reach the best of the rock art. I have to say it was a stunning experience…. I was chuffed that I not only kept up with the youngster but at times was ahead of him – even when he got us lost on a rock face! In the evening light the petroglyphs were picked out in soft reds and oranges. All alone up there, you could almost feel a shaman’s whisper on the soft evening breeze…..
Just a lovely way to spend a winter’s afternoon in Damaraland.

Windhoek , the beauty of Namibia
Windhoek, Namibia’s largest city and capital, is a tidy and modern city with stunning pastel-painted buildings and traditional German houses. Wandering through the city centre of Windhoek will instantly reveal the beauty of the place. The ambiance there is usually laid-back. As it is a somewhat small, pedestrian-friendly city, it is quite walkable. Together with the modern skyscrapers, neo-baroque cathedrals and German ‘castles’ dominate the city’s skyline. Windhoek is a hassle free and cosmopolitan city.

(Part 2)
This is a slightly different style for me, so I hope you like. I decided I wanted to voice over my recent trip to Namibia (because who reads this stuff anyway ha). If you are planning your own trip to Nam and want some more info, here it is;
We drove the Cape Namib Route to Namibia (N7), which is 1478 km (14/15 hours) that’s roughly 4x petrol refills, depending o your car, so you can calculate the cost based on that.
We drove through Keetmanshoop, Mariental and eventually arrived in Windhoek. We actually stayed 70km east of Windhoek in a place Waldburg. There is a shorter route rather than driving in and out of Windhoek, but you need a 4x4 to make the roads. There are tons of farms and camping places outside of Windhoek, I highly recommend renting a lodge or camping site, it’s an incredible area that looks like that opening scene from the Lion King. There are a ton of animals; Kudu, Haartebess, Oryx, Cheetahs, Leopards, Baboons and Cows, you just have to find them! There are less BIG animals in this region; if you want the elephants & lions you have to drive north. Namibia gets its name from the coastal Namib Desert running along the entire west side of the country. The name Namib is of Nama origin and means vast place (the name certainly suits the country. Fun fact, Namibia is the second least densely populated country in the world.
From Windhoek we drove to Swakopmund, 352 km west (a 3.5 hour drive). We drove through 3 small towns called Okahandja, Karibib and Usakos. Swakop is a coastal town situated between desert and ocean, it’s really a beautiful place! There’s a ton to see; like the Salt Pans! The Salt Pans have been running for 81 years, they provide 90% of South Africa’s Salt. Another great place to visit is the Namib Desert (specifically the famous Dunes where they filmed ‘Mad Max’). It may not be the biggest, but it is the oldest Desert in the world, The Namib Desert is roughly 55–80 million years old and stretches for more than 2,000 kilometers along the Atlantic coasts of Angola, Namibia, and South Africa. The Nam Desert is also home to one of the oldest plants in the world, the Welwitschia!
Welwitschia usually lives for around 1500 years in the wild. They are referred to as the ‘living fossil’ because they have been in existence for millions of years.
Another great place to visit in Swakop is ‘The Moon Landscape/Moon Valley’, It came into existence as the river cut through the softer surface deposits. These soft materials were laid down some 460 million years ago when the area's climate was more wet, I guess it got its name because this might be what the moon surface looks like?
Namibia is beautiful and there is still so much more to see! I hope to make it to the north next time, so watch out for a part 3…
