Imbabura is a province located in the Andes of northern Ecuador. The capital is Ibarra. The people of the province speak Spanish and the Imbaburan Quechua language. The summit of Cotacachi Volcano at an elevation of 4,944 metres is 15 kilometres north-east of the town of Cotacachi. The volcano is located in the large Cotacachi Cayapas Ecological Reserve. Imbabura Volcano is also located in the province. Best reached from the town of La Esperanza, the 4,609 metres high mountain can be climbed in a single day.

  • 4. Mindo Nambillo Cloud Forest Reserve Mindo
    Mindo is a mountainous watershed in the western slopes of the Andes, where two of the most biologically diverse ecoregions in the world meet: the Chocoan lowlands and the Tropical Andes. In this transitional area — which covers an area of 268 square kilometers and ranges from 960–3,440 metres above sea level — three rivers and hundreds of streams irrigate the landscape, which is a patchwork of cloud forests, secondary forests, agricultural land, and human settlements. Politically, Mindo is a collection of rural parishes that make up the Noroccidental Administrative Zone of Quito Canton, within Pichincha Province in the northern sierra region of Ecuador.

    The Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve is a 2,000-acre certified conservation area on the North-Western slopes of the Andean mountain range and is located 52 km from the Ecuadorian capital city of Quito. The lodge itself comprises guest rooms, 10 km of walking trails and the four storey geodesic dome, which contains a restaurant, viewing platforms and further accommodation. The Reserve was first established in 1991 by a British/Colombian couple. The area won the Audubon Christmas Bird Count for the Americas in 2006, 2007, and 2008.

    Cotacachi Cayapas Reserve contains 752,235 acres of land and is located in the Imbabura and Esmeraldas provinces of Ecuador 87 miles from Quito. Elevations in the reserve range from about 300 metres in the east to Cotacachi Volcano which reaches an elevation of 4,944 metres in the southwest. This nature reserve is partly rainforest. The park is mix of many biological zones but, the Andean and Sub-tropical zones are most common. The symbol of the reserve is a condor. This is one of the many protected areas in Ecuador This reserve is a part of the Ecuadorian system of reserves and preserve and extends from the mountains of the Sierra to the western edge of the coastal rain forest in the Esmeraldas region.
