My favourite hotels are more than simply places in which to while away time; they are places where it is a privilege to do so. With a history that goes back to William the Conqueror, the Grade I listed Elizabethan manor breathes romance, tantalizingly slipping in and out of sight as you approach it down a mile-long drive, surrounded by meadows and woodland. I love everything about Combe House: the charming, quirky touches, such as the outdoor Bath House and the candlelit Georgian kitchen, the beautiful bedrooms, fine food, wonderful views, Arab horses grazing in the fields, fresh vegetables and flowers picked from the superbly restored Victorian kitchen gardens, hens busy laying eggs for breakfast...I could go on. Without doubt one of the most characterful and romantic hotels I know, and a perfect West Country base.
