    Uwajima is a city located in Ehime Prefecture, Japan. As of October 1, 2010, the city has an estimated population of 86,631 and a population density of 184.53 persons per km². The total area is 469.48 km². In 1595, what is now Uwajima was known as Itajima Village. Takatora Tohdo became lord of the Uwa region, and ordered the restoration of Marugushi Castle. The city was founded by the mergers of the city of Uwajima and parts of former Kitauwa District. After Date Hidemune, the eldest son of Date Masamune, a prominent lord in northern Japan, took over Uwa in 1614, the clan strongly promoted Uwajima Castle as a center of industry, education, and culture.     Kanjizaiji is a Shingon Buddhist temple in Ainan-cho , Minamiuwa District, Ehime, Japan. It is number 40 of the 88 temples in the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Ji means temple in Japanese. Kanjizai is the name of Avalokitesvara which is used in the Heart Sutra . The history of the temple is said to date to the year 807 when Kūkai visited the town and made 3 venerable statues in honor of Emperor Heizei. At that time he made the honzon of Yakushi Nyorai , Wakihutsu Amida-Nyorai and Jūichimen Kanzenon . These statues were quite precious for all the people from the commonalty to the Emperors.     Nishiumi was a town located in Minamiuwa District, Ehime Prefecture, Japan. As of 2005, the town had an estimated population of 2787 and a density of 127.79 persons per km². The total area was 21.81 km².On October 1, 2004, Nishiumi, along with the towns of Ipponmatsu, Jōhen and Mishō, and the village of Uchiumi , was merged to create the town of Ainan. Though now part of Ainan, Nishiumi itself consisted of many individual villages including Fukuura, Funakoshi, Nishiura, and Sotodomari, among others. The industry in Nishiumi consists primarily of fishing and agriculture, producing things such as bonito and mikan oranges.
