Airville is an unincorporated community in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. Airville is located in the southeastern part of the county where Pennsylvania Route 74 and Pennsylvania Route 425 intersect and is about 4 miles outside Woodbine. Airville has an estimated population of 3100 and includes residents from Lower Chanceford, Peach Bottom, and Fawn townships. The Susquehanna River separates Airville from Lancaster County on its eastern side. Travelers can cross the river via the Norman Wood Bridge along Pennsylvania Route 372, which connects to Quarryville in Lancaster County. 1. Indian Echo Caverns Hummelstown
Indian Echo Caverns is a show cave in Derry Township near Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, USA. The limestone caves are open for the public to visit via guided tour. The entrance to the caverns used by modern visitors is located in a bluff along the Swatara Creek. A second entrance was sealed for security purposes when the caverns were commercialized in the late 1920s. The known portions of the caverns, most of which have been commercialized, represent the intersection of two passages: the eastern cavern and the northern cavern, which meet at right angles to form a large space known as the Indian Ballroom. Given the large and accessible natural openings the caverns were likely utilized by Native Americans for storage and shelter, however no evidence of such use has survived. The location was pre...

A Day at Muddy Creek Forks PA (with Ma & Pa RR ride)

Or...THE BEST 45 MINUTES YOU'LL EVER SPEND AT MUDDY CREEK FORKS!

Come spend a day with us, and maybe learn something as well! We'll check out the historic A.M. Grove Store/Station, have a look at the roller mill, the yard, and-above all-take a cab ride on the historic Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad (which we aficionados like to refer to as the Ma & Pa)!

We begin at the Grove store which also once served as the train station and post office for MC Forks (before the area became part of the Airville postal zone). We'll be treated to some player-piano music-and music from an old Victrola! Can you believe that that was once considered state-of-the-art? We then get put through the wringer.

Then-our train ride up the historic line northwest through High Rock to the Laurel passing siding. I utilized footage from my lady's camera as well here (the picture-in-picture) for a different perspective. My camera was zoomed out; hers was set at wide-angle. Notice how in the main zoomed image the train doesn't appear to be going too fast, while in the inset images she shot the train appears to go MUCH faster! I synched the images as best as I could. Heading out, the sun affected some images, but on the return trip, the sun was behind and results were great!

Then-more of the A.M. Grove Store. The lighting in this store was once powered by a low-voltage DC system before receiving conventional AC power in the 1940s. We'll see the wooden hand-operated elevator that we saw in the 2008 video (assuming you watched), but for the first time we'll see the landing on the first floor.

This store is WONDERFUL!! Like stepping back in time! Those of you who visited the Cass (Scenic RR) Country Store in West Virginia will delight in this! And the people are friendly and incredible!

Then-a quick look at the Roller Mill and RR yard where EMD SW-9 #82 (1951) awaits us. For the moment, engine rust (and logistics) prevent this unit from being operated, but if it could be, the Laurel passing siding would make the perfect runaround point for this locomotive, a la Strasburg RR at Leaman Place!

All in all, a great day at MC forks!! A splendid time is guaranteed for all!

Cycling the Heritage Rail Trail - York County PA - June 2016

cycling from New Freedom PA at the Mason Dixon Line to downtown York PA via the Heritage Rail Trail. This trail continues from Maryland and the Torrey C Brown trail. It is more or less 21 miles. Loved riding next to the tracks.
