The Alentejo is a geographical, historical and cultural region of south-central and southern Portugal. In Portuguese, it literally means beyond Tagus river . Alentejo includes the regions of Alto Alentejo and Baixo Alentejo. It corresponds to the districts of Beja, Évora, Portalegre and the Alentejo Litoral. The main cities are: Évora, Beja, Serpa, Estremoz, Elvas and Portalegre. It has borders with Beira Baixa in the North, with Spain (Andalucia and Extremadura in the east, with the Algarve in the South and with the Atlantic Ocean, Ribatejo and Estremadura in the West.     Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain range in Continental Portugal. Together with the Serra da Lousã it is the westernmost constituent range of the Sistema Central and also one of the highest in the system. It includes mainland Portugal's highest point at 1,993 metres above mean sea level . This point is not a distinctive mountain summit, but rather the highest point in a plateau, being known as Torre .
