Brown's Bar on Harsen's Island

Algonac is a city in St. Clair County of the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 4,110 at the 2010 census. Algonac is located at the southern end of the St. Clair River, just before it splits into a large delta region known as the St. Clair Flats. The St. Clair River drains Lake Huron into Lake St. Clair and is part of the Great Lakes Waterway. At the center of Algonac is Algonac City Park, a park which contains a half-mile long boardwalk along the St. Clair River. Just to the north of the city is Algonac State Park. Chicago-to-Boston AA flight: Takeoff, Lake Michigan, Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, Salem MA 2012-01-07

On a mostly clear enroute winter day, a Chicago-to-Boston flight climbs above Chicago's northern suburbs before crossing Lake Michigan to fly east along Michigan's I-94 corridor. Cloud deck below clears just west of Detroit, affording view of the expanse of metropolitan Detroit, followed by Lake St. Clair separating the State of Michigan from the Province of Ontario. After glimpses at a few southwestern Ontario agricultural towns, the flight path hugs the Ontario shore of eastern Lake Erie, providing view of Great Lakes steamer-era ports and current-era summer resort towns. Flight re-enters the U.S. south of Buffalo NY, bringing views of a couple of Upstate New York's Finger Lakes before cloud deck returns until western Massachusetts. The opening reveals pioneer-era mill towns established during America's early industrialization era along one New England river. Salem, Massachusetts, comes into full view as the flight approaches the Atlantic coast to circle to land to the west at Boston Logan Airport.

The Detroit River is 28 miles from Lake St. Clair to Lake Erie, is an international waterway, and one of
the busiest in the world.

Its largest tributary is the River Rouge in Michigan, which is actually four times longer than the Detroit River and contains most of the basin.

In 1907, the Detroit River carried 67,292,504 tons of shipping commerce through Detroit to locations all over the world (London shipped 18,727,230 tons, and New York shipped 20,390,953 tons).

The Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, and the St. Clair River carried 75% of all liquor smuggled into the United States during Prohibition.

The deepest portion of the Detroit River is 53 feet. Fish species in abundance in the area include lake whitefish, sturgeon, silver bass, green bass, salmon, perch, and walleye.

It is estimated that walleye fishing alone brings in $1 million to the economy of communities along the lower Detroit River each spring.
