Appingedam is a municipality and a city in the northeastern Netherlands. Although there is no certainty as to the exact age of Appingedam, historical research demonstrates that the place in which the city would eventually be built had been inhabited for over a millennium. Specifically, the area in which the earliest traces of human settlements have been reported is the Wierde, a quarter located in the northern part of the city centre. Wildlands, also known as Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen, is a zoo in Emmen, the Netherlands. It opened in March 2016, replacing the Emmen Zoo. Wildlands is an adventure theme park with four main areas: Jungola, Serenga, Nortica and Animazia. Jungola is jungle-themed and displays butterflies, tropical birds, large reptiles , ring-tailed lemurs, lar gibbons, small-clawed otters and Asian elephants. The most prominent feature of Jungola is the indoor tropical rainforest hall Rimbula, which at 18,000 m2 is the largest zoo jungle hall in the world and the largest greenhouse in Europe. Fort Bourtange is a star fort in the village of Bourtange, Groningen, Netherlands. It was built under orders of William the Silent and completed in 1593. Its original purpose was to control the only road between Germany and the city of Groningen, which was controlled by the Spaniards during the time of the Eighty Years' War. After experiencing its final battle in 1672, the Fort continued to serve in the defensive network on the German border until it was finally given up in 1851 and converted into a village. Fort Bourtange currently serves as a historical museum.

In this second episode, I take to the tracks to visit one of the Netherlands' northern provinces: Groningen. My first stop is the Menkemaborg, a fortified house turned into a gentleman's home. I then continue to the pre-romanesque church at Marsum. This church, built in the second half of the twelfth century, is situated on a man-made mound (Terp or Wierde) to protect it from floods. I finish the day in the picturesque medieval centre of Appingedam.

Aiko & Jack go to The Netherlands (June 2012)

In June 2012, we took a month off work and headed to the country where I was born - The Netherlands. When we first met, Aiko had shown me around her native Japan, and this time it was my turn to show her where I came from. We behaved totally like tourists, and had an awesome time! We stayed in Appingedam, Groningen City, and Amsterdam, but visited a few other places as well.

On the way back we stopped off in Singapore for a few days as well.

Made a flight in the little hamlet of Marsum in the province of Groningen (The Netherlands). This church is called the Mauritius Church and is from the second half of the 12th century and most of the roof is still original from that time. The bell in the tower is from 1620.

Winterwelvaart Groningen 2017 filmed in 3D, Over-Under format

It’s become almost a tradition: on the last weekend before Christmas, the quaysides of the Hoge and Lage der A are filled with charter ships during the atmospheric WinterWelvaart event.

With their century old warehouses and stately buildings, the Der A’s are among the loveliest spots in the city at any time of the year. But during the weekend of 15 to 17 December, the canals and quaysides will be even more photogenic than ever. Specially for WinterWelVaart, there will be a whole host of mainly historic and atmospherically lit ships.

There will be lots to do on the ships themselves and on the quaysides. The ships will be the setting for intimate concerts, exhibitions and performances, while on shore there will be tastings, a Christmas market and kids’ activities.

WinterWelVaart will not only take place in the city of Groningen, but also at several different locations throughout the province: Appingedam, Zoutkamp and Winschoten on 9 December. This will ensure the history of shipping in Groningen is told even more thoroughly.

Groninger Museum in Groningen op 08-02-2015 (map 125-10)

In 1987 schonk de N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie 25 miljoen gulden aan de Gemeente Groningen. Daardoor werd het mogelijk om een compleet nieuw gebouw te realiseren. Het oude gebouw voldeed niet meer aan de museale eisen van de tijd.
In 1990 koos een commissie de nieuwe locatie voor het museum. Het Groninger Museum moest zich in het Verbindingskanaal tussen de zuidkant van het centrum en het hoofdstation gaan vestigen op een locatie die het stationsgebied verbindt met de binnenstad.
Het ontwerp van het Groninger Museum ziet eruit als een langwerpig eiland. Het bestaat uit drie grote volumes in het water en wordt verbonden door gangen en twee pleinen. Het geheel moest lang uitgestrekt worden en bestaan uit kleine bouwgedeelten. Door die architectuur bleef namelijk het doorzicht voor de bewoners van de singel bestaan. Tevens bleef scheepvaart mogelijk via het Verbindingskanaal.
Het ontwerp voor het nieuwe gebouw had als belangrijk uitgangspunt dat het moest passen bij de sfeer van de collecties van het Groninger Museum. Dit zijn vier uiteenlopende collecties - archeologie en geschiedenis van Groningen, kunstnijverheid, oude beeldende kunst en hedendaagse beeldende kunst.
Voor het ontwerp van het nieuwe museum dat in die tijd geleid werd door Frans Haks werd door de hoofdarchitect Alessandro Mendini, gastarchitecten aangetrokken. Vormgever Michele de Lucchi uit Italië, Philippe Starck uit Parijs en Coop Himmelb(l)au met kantoren in Wenen en Los Angeles. Ook werd samengewerkt met Nederlandse architecten en vormgevers, zoals het Groningse architectenbureau Team 4, Albert Geertjes en Geert Koster.
Het museumgebouw geldt als één van de hoogtepunten van het postmodernisme. De uitgangspunten van Mendini waren: geen hiërarchie in de kunstdisciplines, overvloedig gebruik van decoraties en samenwerken met gastontwerpers. Hierdoor ontstond een divers samenspel van ruimtes.
In 1994 werd het gebouw opgeleverd en werd het museum geopend door Koningin Beatrix.
