Arcola is a city in Douglas County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,916 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1855, when the Illinois Central Railroad was built through the county. The railroad itself was responsible for surveying, platting and founding the town.

1. Lincolns New Salem State Park Petersburg Illinois
Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site is a reconstruction of the former village of New Salem in Menard County, Illinois, where Abraham Lincoln lived from 1831 to 1837. While in his twenties, the future U.S. President made his living in this village as a boatman, soldier in the Black Hawk War, general store owner, postmaster, surveyor, and rail splitter, and was first elected to the Illinois General Assembly. Lincoln left New Salem for Springfield in 1837, and the village was generally abandoned by about 1840, as other towns developed. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps built a historic recreation of New Salem based on its original foundations, establishing a state park commemorating Lincoln and Illinois' frontier history. Heartland Highways 1206: John Conrad, Wally Taylor, Hippie Memorial, Jim Standerfer

Heartland Highways visits Grandpa John's Little Museum and learns the history behind John and his collection of military memorabilia. We also meet Stover Wally Taylor from Mattoon, Illinois. Wally collects and restores wood stoves. Then we head to Arcola to get the full story behind the only Hippie Memorial. And finally, Jim Standerfer of Charleston, Illinois, is featured. Heartland Highways Program 1106: Walldogs, Lawn Rangers, Mattoon Baseball

Heartland Highways is close to home in this episode! It's off to Arcola to meet the Walldogs! This group of traveling muralists are from all over the world and they made a stop in Arcola last summer to paint murals depicting the history of the town. Then, we meet the Arcola Lawn Rangers. This group of parade enthusiasts pushes lawn mowers and lives by the motto, You're only young once, but you can always be immature. And finally we'll take a look at the nostalgic history of baseball in Mattoon.
