Built in 1891, it was the headquarters and bottling plant of the Dixie Coca-Cola Bottling Company, and the place where the transition from Coca-Cola as a drink served at a soda fountain to a mass-marketed bottled soft drink took place. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1983, and is one of the only buildings in Atlanta dating to Coca-Cola's early history. Since 1966 the building has been the Baptist Student Union for Georgia State University.

    The Tullie Smith House is a small plantation or farm house, built circa 1840 by Robert Smith. It is typical of the usual kind of plantation houses owned by small farmers. The house was located in Dekalb County, Georgia on 800 acres . The last Smith to occupy the property was Tullie, the great-great-granddaughter of Robert. By the 1960s the house was surrounded by highways and development, and was donated to the Atlanta Historical Society. The house was moved in 1969 to its present site in Atlanta on the grounds of Swan House. The house has been restored and is operated by the Atlanta History Center as a 19th-century historic house museum known as the Smith Family Farm. Living history presentations are given during special events.

While in his twenties, the future U.S. President made his living in this village as a boatman, soldier in the Black Hawk War, general store owner, postmaster, surveyor, and rail splitter, and was first elected to the Illinois General Assembly. Lincoln left New Salem for Springfield in 1837, and the village was generally abandoned by about 1840, as other towns developed.
