Bishkek , formerly Pishpek and Frunze, is the capital and largest city of Kyrgyzstan . Bishkek is also the administrative centre of the Chuy Region. The province surrounds the city, although the city itself is not part of the province, but rather a province-level unit of Kyrgyzstan. In 1825 Khokand authorities established the fortress of Pishpek in order to control local caravan-routes and to collect tribute from Kyrgyz tribes. On 4 September 1860, with the approval of the Kyrgyz, Russian forces led by Colonel Zimmermann destroyed the fortress.     Victory Square is a public square in the city of Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. It is dedicated to the Victory in the Victory over Nazi Germany. It was created in 1984, in on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Liberation of the USSR.The square features a statue of a woman, waiting for her husband to return home from the war. The central area is filled with an eternal fire, The square is held together by three ribs of red granite representing a yurt. A Guard of Honour company from the National Guard of Kyrgyzstan guards the eternal flame, with the Changing of the Guard Ceremony taking place every hour.
