The Bahá'í Faith in South Carolina begins in the transition from Jim Crow to the Civil Rights movement but defines another approach to the problem, and proceeded according to its teachings. The first mention in relation to the history of the religion came in the 1860s in a newspaper article. Following this the first individual from South Carolina to find the religion was Louis Gregory in 1909, followed by individuals inside the state. Communities of Bahá'ís were soon operating in North Augusta, Columbia and Greenville struggled with segregation culture through the 1950s externally and internally. However, in the 1969-1973 period, a very remarkable and somewhat unsustainable period of conversions to the religion on the basis of a meeting of Christian and Bahá'í religious ideas establi...

2. Button Museum Bishopville
Dalton Stevens , better known as the Button King, was a hobbyist, outsider artist and musician notable for his unusual button art and related media appearances. Since 1983, Stevens had painstakingly decorated various objects with thousands of colorful buttons. These works include the suits and shoes he wore, the guitar he played, and a 1983 Chevrolet Chevette. Stevens had also created and operated a roadside museum in Bishopville, South Carolina which houses his art.

Things to See in South Carolina: Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden

Mr. Pearl Fryar in Bishopville, S.C., had one goal when he began landscaping his yard into an artistic garden in the 1980s, to win Yard of the Month hosted by the local garden club. In 1985, he won.

Mr. Fryar has not had formal training in topiaries yet his yard is full of whimsical sculptures formed from trees and shrubbery. Today, the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden is known throughout the world.

Admission is free, donations are welcome, dogs are welcome (clean up after them), please don’t ring the doorbell to the home.

Since the early 1980s, Pearl Fryar has created fantastic topiary at his garden in Bishopville, South Carolina. Many of the plants in Pearl’s garden were rescued from the compost pile at local nurseries. With Pearl’s patience and skilled hands, these “throw aways” have thrived and have been transformed into wonderful abstract shapes. Pearl Fryar and his garden are now internationally recognized and have been the subject of numerous newspaper and magazine articles, television shows, and even a documentary, A Man Named Pearl. Today, the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden draws visitors from around the globe.
Pearl’s garden contains over 300 individual plants.
