Riding the Amtrak Autumn Express 2016 10/30/16 Part 3 - Harrisburg to New York
After turning the train around on the wye next to the Rockville Bridge, the Autumn Express starting heading back east. When we got to the Harrisburg station, we ended up getting held to allow a Keystone train to depart ahead of us. We had actually gotten to Harrisburg much earlier than the crew were expecting, which caused us to get caught up in Amtrak traffic on the Keystone Corridor in a few different areas. The stretch between Mount Joy and Lancaster was especially brutal, as we found ourselves crawling along at about 15 MPH for several miles to allow the eastbound Pennsylvanian and a westbound Keystone train pass by.
Once we finally got to Lancaster, the passengers were allowed to get off and wait at the station for a photo opportunity. The train backed out, then pulled back in to simulate a normal station stop. This gave me my only good look at the full consist, with P42DC 145, P42DC 42, and ACS-64 642 leading the way. After the train pulled by in, 642's pantograph was raised and the train ran on electric power for the remainder of the trip. We ultimately arrived back at New York 5 minutes ahead of schedule. I do wish I had been on the right side of the train to see certain things, but I still had a great time riding this train. Please enjoy this last chunk of footage from the ride!
0:00 Passing through Harrisburg Station. Once again, ACS-64 634 can be seen on a stub track next to the station, while P42DC 92 is seen sitting with Cab Car 9646.
1:41 Rolling through Steelton. We will pass by the large ArcelorMittal steel plant, which was apparently once part of Bethlehem Steel.
4:25 Middletown. The Middletown & Hummelstown Railroad can be seen turning off into the middle of the borough as we approach the station.
6:07 Racing through Elizabethtown. Just after the station, we pass by the Mars chocolate plant.
7:17 Mount Joy. After the station, we pass by Newcomer Road, which once crossed the tracks at a grade crossing, but is now cut into two dead-ends. Not too far after Newcomer Road, we cross the last remaining grade crossing on the Keystone Corridor, a small private crossing leading into a farm. We will also see Eby Chiques Road, another road which once crossed the tracks at a grade crossing that was ripped up about 4 years ago.
10:00 At the Lancaster station, we see the train backing up in preparation for a photo opportunity. 13:17 Bird in Hand to Paradise. As we pass through the farms in Ronks, we will see Irishtown Road, yet another former grade crossing which was ripped up in late 2011-early 2012.
17:12 Parkesburg to just outside Coatesville. The tracks here are very far apart from each other, clear evidence that this stretch once had 4 tracks.

21:08 Radnor to Bryn Mawr. We will pass over the Norristown High-Speed Line and Route 476 in quick succession before passing through Villanova. As we enter Bryn Mawr, we race past an Amtrak work train and several MOW units on the track next to us.

HISTORY OF GREENCASTLE, PA
Greencastle was founded in 1782 by John Allison. The town was named after a small town in County Donegal, Ireland. It was originally composed of 246 lots. By 1790 there were about sixty houses in Greencastle, homes to approximately 400 people. The town of Greencastle had grown by the mid-nineteenth century to 1,125 residents.
Early in the American Civil War, Greencastle and neighboring Franklin County communities raised the 126th Pennsylvania Infantry. In the summer of 1863, the war touched close to home when Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his Army of Northern Virginia invaded lower Pennsylvania in what later became known as the Gettysburg Campaign. From mid-June to early July, those residents of Greencastle that had not fled to safety lived under Confederate rule. On July 2, concurrent with the Battle of Gettysburg in neighboring Adams County, Captain Ulric Dahlgren's Federal cavalry patrol galloped into Greencastle's town square, where they surprised and captured several Confederate cavalrymen carrying vital correspondence from Richmond. After the Battle of Gettysburg, Lee's army began its retreat to Virginia on July 4 and 5. He sent John D. Imboden's cavalry to escort a large wagon train carrying Confederate wounded. The train, nearly 18 miles (29 km) in length, wound its way through the streets of Greencastle, where few bitter men of the town attacked the wagon train with axes and hatchets. They succeeded in disabling several wagons before Confederate cavalry chased them away.
Following the war, Greencastle grew considerably in the late 19th century during the Industrial Revolution, having several industrial factories built inside the town limits, including the Crowell Manufacturing Company, which constructed farming equipment.
In 1902, Greencastle businessman Philip Baer began a tradition where the town holds a triennial social event known as Old Home Week. Every three years, Greencastle townspeople and former residents come together in a town-wide reunion to reminisce and fellowship. The most recent Old Home Week Celebration occurred in 2010; the next one is to be held in 2013.
