Brewood Circular Day Hiking Staffordshire England UK

A 10 mile day hiking trip with and my partner Anne one weekend in October 2010 from Brewood, Staffordshire, England, UK. After parking the car in Brewood, off Stafford Street (grid ref SJ885089) we set off on our circular route in a wide anti-clockwise direction. Initially, we were hiking in a south west direction towards Chillington Hall and Langley Lawn Farm. After that we went south around Big Wood and over the M54 Motorway to Codsall Wood. Next we went east, skirting Codsall until we again hit the M54 close to Upper Hattons. We hiked under the motorway bridge and connected with the Shropshire Union Canal. To complete the trip we hiked northwards for about 2 miles along the canal until we returned to Brewood. This was fairly varied day hiking trip and even though there were a few long straight sections, they were still quite interesting.

We feel that his was a moderate to hard day hike because it was over 10 miles. The route was more or less flat with a few slight inclines, along solid trails, farm segments, and a few country lanes and roads. Most of route was clear and well marked. However, there were a few times we had to search for path signposts. We feel that it was a very good route for exploring the Brewood to Codsall area in South Staffordshire. Brewood is a lovely little village, well worth a visit. Hiking this area provided us with some lovely opportunities for taking photographs.

44871 & 45407 storm past Chinley hauling 'The Tin Bath' 01-11-2015

In the space of 30 miles, there could have been no greater contrast in the weather than today, when the second Tin Bath of the year took to the rails of the North West. With limited capacity through Bolton due to the overrunning Farnworth Tunnel works and the East end of the Liverpool & Manchester closed for engineering work, only 1 route from Preston to Manchester remained, this being the Wigan-Manchester direct line via Atherton, which is where we begin. Steam hauled railtours are extremely rare down here with the vast majority of tours heading round to Bolton.
We had chosen an overbridge to the East of Atherton for the opening shot, however when upon arrival we found we couldn't actually see over it the most logical place to go was the nearby station, still complete with canopy. With mist and fog a prominent feature, the 2 fives appeared with virtually no warning, passing through at more or less line speed of 50mph.
As we drove around the outskirts of Manchester on the M60 the fog finally began to clear, and by the time we reached the second shot of the day, from the top of Eccles Pike overlooking Chinley, the sun was shining with clear blue skies and very little wind-perfect for hillside shots. In similar fashion to February, the tour was given the right away from New Mills South Junction literally seconds behind the Cleethorpes bound Transpennine service but by the time the fives rounded the bend at Buxworth, the units had already disappeared into Cowburn Tunnel. 44871 looked to be doing more work than 45407, but there was plenty of noise as they headed through Chinley station and on towards the triangle before accelerating hard up the final grade into the 2 mile long tunnel to Edale.
