Exploring the French Riviera from Cagnes Sur Mer
In this video, we explore the Cagnes Sur Mer area of the French Riviera, where we were able to make day trips to Cannes and Nice, visiting the beaches of Cannes and exploring the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. We spend an evening in the Haut de Cagnes were we took in some great views and found a great meal.

The medieval village of Haut-de-Cagnes, situated at the top of the castle hill, is the historical part of the town. Some 650 people chose to live in this ancient quarter (classified historical site since 1948) for the calmness of its village life, so different from the frenetic pace of the Côte d'Azur. If you are looking for authenticity, you will definitely be charmed by the patina of age on the old stones, the shade of the narrow streets full of flowers and local artists' studios.
This place, so unique on the Côte d'Azur, offers great viewpoints, showing a magnificent panorama of both the mountains and the sea. Many famous artists, such as Renoir, Soutine, Modigliani, Ziem or Klein fell in love with Haut-de-Cagnes. In 1960, the famous cabaret singer, Suzy Solidor (1900-1985) set up her cabaret -restaurant and café (that later became the antique shop), in one of the houses at the corner of the castle square. Nowadays, the cabaret has changed into Espace Solidor, the space where contemporary jewellery exhibitions are held.
La Maison des Artistes - the artists' house, is a place dedicated to local contemporary painters and sculptors. Modern art exhibitions take place here regularly. The original medieval church was restored and enlarged in 16th and 18th century. The façade of the church and some of the interior paintings date from this period. The picture in the main altar represents St Peter receiving the keys to paradise. The Way of the Cross series of paintings by local artist Charles Barkev, were placed of the church in 2000. They have the particularity of representing the inhabitants of Haut-de-Cagnes, who accepted to pose for the artist.
The first oratory was built here in 14th century; the place was outside the town walls, on the road to Italy. The chapel is divides in two parts, the closed apse and the outdoor nave, originally meant to serve as shelter for pilgrims. In the apse you can still see the colourful frescos (by Andrea de Cella) from 1530, discovered in 1930 under a layer of plaster. These well preserved mural paintings represent the scenes from the life of Virgin Mary and the childhood of Jesus.

Cagnes-sur-Mer is a picturesque French Riviera town known for its forests, pebble beaches, and seaside charm in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. It is also home to the only horse hippodrome in the French Riviera, which draws people from all over for its horse races.

Villeneuve-Loubet is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southeastern France. It lies between Cagnes-sur-Mer and Antibes, at the mouth of the river Loup.
It was created by the joining two old villages: the old village of Villeneuve inland and the village of Loubet on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. Its inhabitants are called Villeneuvois. It is at the same time a seaside resort and part of the technopole of Sophia Antipolis, many companies of the tertiary sector being installed in the city.
Villeneuve-Loubet is the birthplace of the famous 19th century provençal chef, restaurateur, and culinary writer Auguste Escoffier, the author of the Guide Culinaire and the founder of French haute cuisine. Villeneuve-Loubet was also, from 1920 onwards, the home of Maréchal Philippe Pétain (1856–1951), the Hero of Verdun in World War I and chief of state of the Nazi-collaborationist État Français, commonly known as Vichy France, in World War II. The writer and historian Jules Bertaut (1877–1959) died in Villeneuve-Loubet. Marshall Philippe Pétain purchased a house called L'Ermitage in Villeneuve-Loubet circa 1920.
Villeneuve-Loubet was also the site of a battle in World War II when it was liberated by the First Special Service Force on August 26, 1944. The tower of the castle was damaged by a shell fired by the US Navy, and dozens of soldiers from both sides were killed or wounded. In 2006, the bodies of fourteen Germans who were killed during the fighting were discovered in a mass grave near the town by a local medical student. Saint Marc Church (15th century): The stained glasses have been realised by the artist painter Pier Lecolas in 2006.

West of Nice, Cagnes-sur-Mer is a seaside resort that seduces tourists with its 3.5 kilometers of beach and chic new shopping mall, the Polygone Riviera, as well as CAP 3000. But there’s also a venerable side to the city, huddled around a medieval château built for the Grimaldis of Monaco.
This arty neighbourhood was the haunt of many Impressionists, and one of the greatest, Auguste Renoir settled in the town later in his life.
The other feather in Cagnes’ cap is how quickly you can reach other great Riviera locations like the precious hilltop village, Saint-Paul-de-Vence, and the incomparable city of Nice.
Early in the 19th century, Italian fishing families settled by the water at what had been a marshy cove sheltered from the easterly winds. It’s a little hamlet of narrow streets with low houses, not far from the port but easy to miss because of all the modern development that has sprung up around it. In 1866 the fishers built the Chapelle de Saint-Pierre, St Peter being the patron saint of fishermen. The chapel, which goes by ” l’église jaune” was designed to stand out and survives as the quarter’s main seamark.
The full length of the beachfront is bordered by a newly regenerated promenade, pushing cars back from the waterfront and letting you wander beneath the palms fronds instead. As with Nice’s Baie des Anges the sea has an irresistible whitish glow when the sun catches it on windless days. If you’re in need of additional luxuries then Cagnes six private beaches offer parasols, sunbed hire, restaurants and even waiter service.
