Several ground depressions at the site have been interpreted by researchers as house pits, indicating the presence of a semipermanent village. Two dense shell middens have preserved extensive faunal remains, along with other artifacts. Radiocarbon dates taken at the site roughly span a period from ca. 1100 CE to ca. 1700 CE. Administered by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, the park is open to the public and is fee-free. Amenities at the park, which is 5 miles south of Cannon Beach along U.S. Route 101, include picnicking, fishing, and a Pacific Ocean beach.Hug Point, the cape for which it is named, lies in the park. Late 19th century stagecoaches that used the beach as a highway had to 'hug' this particular point even at low tide to get around it, hence the name Hug Point.

The state park also contains Neahkahnie Mountain, Short Sand Beach, Short Sand Creek, Necarney Creek, Cape Falcon, Smugglers Cove and the Oregon Coast Trail. The cove is a popular surf destination and is known as Short Sands. Urban legend claims pirate treasure is buried near Smugglers Cove but has never been found.
