Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area is located in the states of Wyoming and Utah. For thousands of years the Green River carved its course through the colorful rock formations of the area to form the deep canyons that now serve as a geographic marvel to all visitors. With the construction of the Flaming Gorge Dam in the early 1960’s, a recreational setting was established which has become one of the most visited sites in the continental United States. Visitors and residents alike are spellbound by the beauty of the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, with its 91 mile long lake, the Green River and its deep canyons.

It features normal Continental items along with assorted hot items that alternate daily. Some of these items include sausage links and patties, scrambled eggs, bacon, cheddar cheese omelets, biscuits & gravy, and pancakes. We also have a restaurant only a half mile away from our property called the Oasis Diner that serves great breakfast. What transport is available to get around?A shuttle service is free of charge and it can take guests anywhere they want to go in our city. The shuttle hours are from 7:00AM 11:00PM. What can I do nearby?As far as entertainment goes, there is a lot to see here in Raton. There is a beautiful state park called Sugarite State Park just 10 miles from our hotel. There is a $5.00 parking pass that gives you a full day to hike miles of beautiful mountainous trails, fish any of 3 lakes (with a NM fishing license that can be purchased at the local K-Mart), or explore the ruins of an abandon mining camp. You can also visit the local museum, which is free of charge, to learn about the local area's history and see relics of its past. There is a National Monument only 25 miles from our hotel called Capulin National Monument. It is a dormant volcano that has beautiful hiking views of the surrounding Raton Volcanic Field, and tons of information about the surrounding mesas and volcanoes. We also have a local movie theater which is the only movie theater within a 100 mile radius that features 3D capabilities. They feature matinees on the weekends, and daily shows. Do you have internet?Yes, we do have free wired and wireless internet connection in every room in our hotel. We also feature a business office equipped with two computers hooked up to the internet, and a fax/printer. Do you provide parking?We do have free parking at our facility.

May 2013 - Going to Raton, New Mexico
We have made it off of highway 12 and got gas in Trinidad, Colorado. We are heading South here from Trinidad on I-25 going to Raton where we will connect onto highway 64 that will take us to Clayton, New Mexico...then on into Amarillo, Texas for the night. Be careful on this road going South from Colorado into New Mexico at the top of Raton Pass. The New Mexico State highway patrol love to sit on the New Mexico side about a mile from the top and catch you going down. There are several excellent hiding spots where they get at times and you cant see them until you are right there in their face.
I sure would like to cruise down this road on a bicycle...downhill for something like 10 to 12 miles.

The Chapel Hill was originally built in 1922 for Post Cereals Heiress, Marjorie Merriweather Post, and stock broker and investment banker E.F. Hutton, at the St. Charles, Missouri plant of American Car & Foundry in Lot 9336 to Plan 2081.
Originally christened Hussar, the car was used for company business and personal travel between their principal residence in New York City; their Hispanic-Moresque winter estate, Mar-a-lago, in Palm Beach; and Camp Topridge, the couple’s summer retreat in the Adirondacks of upstate New York. It was also used extensively for entertainment, as Post was known as a lavish hostess.
The Huttons divorced in 1935 and the Hussar became a part of Post’s settlement. She later remarried Joseph E. Davies, a Washington, D.C. attorney and ambassador to the Soviet Union and Belgium. After the Davies left for the Soviet Union in 1937, the Hussar was sold to the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway.
The Chesapeake & Ohio Railway – Office Car 3 Shortly after the car was acquired, a Pullman air-conditioning system, complete with roof ducting, was installed. The Hussar was renamed simply Office Car 2. It was renumbered several times before finally settling on Office Car 3.
In 1957, the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) modernized the entire window line. Other exterior changes through the years included roller bearings added to the trucks, a rebuilt open-platform and the service door relocated to the opposite side of the car, across from the kitchen and pantry.
DeWitt Chapple, Jr. purchased Office Car 3 from C&O in 1971. Chapple retained the car’s number, but added the name Chapel Hill after his alma mater, the University of North Carolina, in Chapel Hill.
Chapple’s interest in private cars stems from early school years. He was a guest of Frank Pidcock III on the Georgia Northern’s business car Moultrie, which later became the Gold Coast, the first private car owned by Lucius Beebe and Charles Clegg. It is now an honored show piece at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento.
In 1972, Chapple made his first private car trip aboard the now renamed Chapel Hill to Philadelphia on the rear of the National Limited. Since then he has accumulated over 250,000 miles aboard the Chapel Hill both in the United States and Canada.
The Chapel Hill has the further distinction of being one of three private cars in attendance at the American Association of Private Railroad Car Owners (AAPRCO) first private car convention in Chicago in 1978. DeWitt Chapple was also a founding member of AAPRCO and served as its president in 2004 and 2005. DeWitt has attended all 37 annual AAPRCO conventions since its inception, and the Chapel Hill has attended 30+ AAPRCO conventions.
Rich in history, the Chapel Hill continues its travels throughout the United States today, logging thousands of miles annually. In 2009, Jeff and Tracy McClorey sold their share of Chapel Hill, to John and Anne Atherton, and Lee and Lisa Nordloh in order to concentrate on Bromwell’s. In 2012 the Nordlohs sold their interest in Chapel Hill in order for Lee to concentrate on his surveying business. At that time Mark and Karen Werner were welcomed into the Chapel Hill family as partners.

Thunderstorm, US 87, NM. 20-July-10
I saw this thunderstorm coming for about half an hour before I hit it. Didn't know it was so deep and violent; it was AWESOME! Pea sized hail, 10 foot visibility, 30-40 mph winds, lightening everywhere, roads flooding: everything someone could ask for. I had to roll through it out of safety, there was no where to stop and be protected from the lightening. Good excuse, would have ridden through anyway, really... ;-)
