In researching different elements of Silent Hill, screenwriter Roger Avary came across a town called Centralia which is in Pennsylvania. Centralia planted the seed for what developed into the town of Silent Hill.
This is a short documentary I made in 2003 about the town which inspired Silent Hill which has been linked to from various places on the net.

Reading and Northern Mountain Job in the Fall
In this video, we'll follow the Reading and Northern's Mountain Job on a fall November day of the return trip from Mt. Carmel, PA to Tamaqua, PA, pulled by two refurbished Santa Fe GP30's, now R&N GP39RN's 2530 and 2531, in a sharp paint scheme that resembles the Reading Railroad's GP40-2's. The last time we chased this train in June 2014, the locomotives were still in fresh Santa Fe livery, seemingly out of place on an Anthracite Railroad in the mountains of eastern Pennsylvania. November 11, 2014: The R&N Mountain Job train MCQA (Mt. Carmel - TamaQuA) returns from Mt. Carmel after shifting cars at International Paper, picking up addition cars along the way on the former Reading Mahanoy & Shamokin Branch, including plastics covered hoppers from the North Shore interchange at Mt. Carmel, empty lumber centerbeams at Gordon, and additional covered hoppers at Girardville. The weather is always changing in the mountains at this time of year, as we started out sunny, then hit clouds, to dense fog and mist at times.
0:00 - MCQA departs International Paper, which is the end of the line for the trains morning trip, and beginning the return to Tamaqua.
1:00 - The train drops down hill through the small town of Locust Gap. This was once a busy line for coal trains, but now this is the only train to run these rails.
3:15 - While the Mahanoy & Shamokin branch connected Eastern Schuylkill County to Northumberland County, the curve through Locustdale cuts through the bottom right corner of Columbia County, making it one of the few active Railroads in this County.
4:20 - The sun comes out briefly as MCQA drops through the curves at Tielman Road, outside of Gordon. Rather than the railroad running straight from Locustdale to Ashland, it makes a giant horseshoe around the mountain, passing through Gordon.
5:50 - After picking up 3 empty centerbeams at Gordon, the train crosses Route 61 just south of Ashland. The late fall scene is at it's best here, and at the next location.
7:45 - Heading along the snug hillside through the small town of Girardville, the scenes of a late fall in November is at its finest here. NOTE: In the video I incorrectly label this location as Gilberton, which is actually a couple miles to the east, before St. Nicholas. Sorry for any confusion.
8:45 - After picking up more cars at Gilberton, MCQA passes a private crossing at Blaschak Coal, which is an active Anthracite Mine.
10:00 - MCQA emerges through the Southern portal of the 3500' Mahanoy Tunnel through Buck Mountain, which is one of the oldest tunnels in the region, dating back to completion in 1862. This side of the tunnel contains the now defunct fan house, which forced fresh air into the tunnel during the era of Steam Locomotives.
11:15 - The train eases for a short pause at East Mahanoy Junction, where it will enter the main line to Tamaqua, formerly the Reading's Little Schuylkill Branch. The Catawissa Branch ran to the north.
13:45 - Just north of Tamaqua, MCQA passes the new 99N signal.

The National Security Agency (NSA) is a national-level intelligence agency of the United States Department of Defense, under the authority of the Director of National Intelligence. The NSA is responsible for global monitoring, collection, and processing of information and data for foreign intelligence and counterintelligence purposes, specializing in a discipline known as signals intelligence (SIGINT). The NSA is also tasked with the protection of U.S. communications networks and information systems. The NSA relies on a variety of measures to accomplish its mission, the majority of which are clandestine.Originating as a unit to decipher coded communications in World War II, it was officially formed as the NSA by President Harry S. Truman in 1952. Since then, it has become the largest of the U.S. intelligence organizations in terms of personnel and budget. The NSA currently conducts worldwide mass data collection and has been known to physically bug electronic systems as one method to this end. The NSA has also been alleged to have been behind such attack software as Stuxnet, which severely damaged Iran's nuclear program. The NSA, alongside the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), maintains a physical presence in many countries across the globe; the CIA/NSA joint Special Collection Service (a highly classified intelligence team) inserts eavesdropping devices in high value targets (such as Presidential palaces or embassies). SCS collection tactics allegedly encompass close surveillance, burglary, wiretapping, [and] breaking and entering.Unlike the CIA and the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), both of which specialize primarily in foreign human espionage, the NSA does not publicly conduct human-source intelligence gathering. The NSA is entrusted with providing assistance to, and the coordination of, SIGINT elements for other government organizations - which are prevented by law from engaging in such activities on their own. As part of these responsibilities, the agency has a co-located organization called the Central Security Service (CSS), which facilitates cooperation between the NSA and other U.S. defense cryptanalysis components. To further ensure streamlined communication between the signals intelligence community divisions, the NSA Director simultaneously serves as the Commander of the United States Cyber Command and as Chief of the Central Security Service.
The NSA's actions have been a matter of political controversy on several occasions, including its spying on anti-Vietnam-war leaders and the agency's participation in economic espionage. In 2013, the NSA had many of its secret surveillance programs revealed to the public by Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractor. According to the leaked documents, the NSA intercepts and stores the communications of over a billion people worldwide, including United States citizens. The documents also revealed the NSA tracks hundreds of millions of people's movements using cellphones metadata. Internationally, research has pointed to the NSA's ability to surveil the domestic Internet traffic of foreign countries through boomerang routing.
