Boy! What a Girl! is a 1947 race film directed by Arthur H. Leonard and starring Tim Moore, with guest appearances by the Brown Dots, Slam Stewart, Sid Catlett and Gene Krupa.
Plot
Would-be theatrical producer Jim Walton (Elwood Smith) is planning a new show that will feature bandleader Slam Stewart and the comic female impersonator Bumpsie (Tim Moore). Mr. Cummings, the wealthy father of Jim’s girlfriend Cristola, has agreed to finance half of the show if the famous Parisian impresario Madame Deborah will provide the second half of the funding. When word arrives that Madame Deborah’s arrival from France has been delayed, Bumpsie is brought in to keep Mr. Cummings occupied. Mr. Cummings, however, is unaware that Bumpsie is a man in drag and he falls in love with him.
The real Madame Deborah unexpectedly arrives early and passes herself off as Mrs. Martin. Two other would-be suitors, impressed with Madame Deborah’s wealth, begin to pursue Bumpsie.
A fundraising party for the show is held, where several musical acts arrive to perform. A pair of thugs attempt to kidnap Bumpsie, believing he is Madame Deborah, but he manages to escape. The real Madame Deborah identifies herself and agrees to finance Jim’s show, enabling him to achieve his professional goals and to marry Cristola.
Production
Boy! What a Girl! was planned to be the first in a series of all-black race films produced by the independent company Herald Pictures. The film’s press kit acknowledged the segregated distribution patterns of the race film by proclaiming Boy! What a Girl! would be “an all-Negro motion picture can be produced to play in any theater in the country and not merely confined to the some 600 odd playhouses that cater strictly to an all-Negro audience.”
The film was shot at the Fox Movietone Studio in New York City. Gene Krupa, the only white member of the cast, was not originally signed to appear in the film; director Arthur H. Leonard invited Krupa to be on camera when the famous drummer stopped by to visit cast member Sid Catlett on the set.
Boy! What a Girl! was the only starring film role for Tim Moore, an African American vaudeville comedy star who later became famous as the Kingfish in the television series Amos 'n Andy.
A pre-production news item identified Marva Lewis, the ex-wife of boxing champion Joe Louis, as being a part of the cast, but she is not present in the finished film, as she was forced to withdraw due to illness. She was replaced by the Brown Dots.
Legacy
There has been a revival of interest in the film in recent years due to the prominence of its black cast.
In the words of Donald Bogale, the race films of the late 40s succeeded as fundamental celebrations of cultural roots and communal spirits and also as pure, undiluted celebrations of black style. Such movies as Broken Strings, Boy! What a Girl! (1946), Sepia Cinderella (1947), Bronze Buckeroo, and scores of others introduced a new rhythm to American cinema. Vocal inflections and intonations set the ears abuzz. The manners, gestures, postures, surprising double takes, swift interplay and communication between the characters is a world unto itself, capturing, despite whatever other distortions or failings, a segment of black American life and culture.

Hidden Figures: Callie House #BlackHERstoryMonth 10/28
Callie House (1861–1928) was a leader of the National Ex-Slave Mutual Relief, Bounty and Pension Association, one of the first organizations to campaign for reparations for slavery in the United States.
Callie House is most famous for her efforts to gain reparations for former slaves and is regarded as the early leader of the reparations movement among African American political activists. Callie Guy was born a slave in Rutherford Country near Nashville, Tennessee. Her date of birth is usually assumed to be 1861 but due to the lack of birth records for slaves, this date is not certain. She was raised in a household that included her widowed mother, sister, and her sister’s husband. House received some primary school education.
At the age of 22, she married William House and moved to Nashville, where she raised five children. To support her family, House worked at home as a washerwoman and seamstress. In 1891, a pamphlet entitled Freedmen’s Pension Bill: A Plea for American Freedmen began circulating around the black communities in central Tennessee. This pamphlet, which espoused the idea of financial compensation as a means of rectifying past exploitation of slavery, persuaded House to become involved in the cause that would become her life’s work.
With the help of Isaiah Dickerson, House chartered the National Ex-Slave Mutual Relief, Bounty and Pension Association in 1898, and was named the secretary of this new organization. Eventually House became the leader of the organization. In this position she traveled across the South, spreading the idea of reparations in every former slave state with relentless zeal. During her 1897-1899 lecture tour the Association’s membership by 34,000 mainly through her efforts. By 1900 its nationwide membership was estimated to be around 300,000.
House and Dickerson were known for visiting black churches—one of the few places blacks could organize without white interference. The National Ex-Slave Mutual Relief, Bounty and Pension Association was known by the acronym MRB&PA, and was chartered August 7, 1897 with the goal of providing compensation to ex-slaves, mutual aid, and burial costs. At its peak, it claimed membership in the hundreds of thousands. As their number grew, newspapers of the time often ridiculed House's efforts and the federal government attempted to arrest her and other leaders of the Association. Despite lack of evidence, the federal Post Office Department accused slavery reparation organizations like MRB&PA of frauding their members, and in 1899, the MRB&PA was forbidden to send mail or cash money orders.
The Department of Justice opened an official investigation of the MRB&PA, and in 1901, Isaiah Dickerson was found guilty of “swindling” for encouraging former slaves to seek reparations. The conviction was later overturned. When Dickerson died in 1909, Callie House become the official leader of the MRB&PA. She, too, was convicted and served time in the Jefferson City, Missouri penitentiary from November 1917 to August 1918. Callie House died in Nashville at the age of 67 on June 6, 1928 from cancer.
In 2015 Vanderbilt University's African American and Diaspora Studies Program renamed its research arm the Callie House Research Center for the Study of Black Cultures and Politics.

Canadian Consulate Sustainability Conference | Global Voices Lecture Series
On October 26th at International House, government representatives from Canada, Mexico, and the United States held a panel discussion on how North America is working to mitigate climate change, implement sustainability objectives at international, national and local levels, and meet shared objectives from the 2015 Paris Climate Conference (COP21) and the North American Leaders' Summit. Following this trilateral, multi-national forum, representatives from the City of Chicago and local organizations discussed initiatives to make Chicago a more sustainable city.
The first panel is a trilateral Canada-Mexico-US panel with speakers discussing shared climate change goals from Paris, North America’s role in fighting climate change as expressed during the North American Leaders’ Summit (NALS) and work to set/achieve national targets. Proposed speakers are drawn from USEPA, Environment Canada, SEMARNAT, and local Canadian and Mexican consulates. This was an excellent opportunity to highlight to a US audience the three countries compatible positions on climate change, environmental stewardship, and work towards the trilateral NALS initiatives of clean energy and the environment.
Speakers for the trilateral panel include Enrique Lendo Fuentes, Head of the International Affairs Unit of the Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and Daniel Wolfish, Director General of the Multilateral and Bilateral Affairs Directorate of Environment and Climate Change Canada. Howard Learner, President and Executive Director of the Environmental Law & Policy Center, moderated the discussion.
The second panel, organized by various University of Chicago and local Chicago sustainability groups, focuses on local city/community/university-level initiatives and policies to achieve sustainability and climate change goals at the local level (in line with the national goals covered in the first panel). Proposed speakers on this panel include the City of Chicago’s Chief Sustainability officer, a similar speaker from the University of Chicago, academics, and local NGO representatives.
Speakers for the second, regional panel include Chris Wheat, Chief Sustainability Officer and Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of Chicago; Mayor Rahm Emanuel; Charlie Catlett, Director Urban Center for Computation and Data and Senior Fellow Argonne National Laboratory; and Sumit Ray, UChicago Office of Sustainability, Engineering and Facilities. Rachel Bronson, Director of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, moderated the panel.

The FBI estimates there are currently over 300 active serial killers in the United States. What would happen if these killers had a way of communicating and connecting with each other? What if they were able to work together and form alliances across the country? What if one brilliant psychotic serial killer was able to bring them all together and activate a following? Welcome to The Following, the terrifying new thriller from creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries, Dawson's Creek, the Scream franchise). When notorious serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy, Rome) escapes from death row and embarks on a new killing spree, the FBI calls former agent Ryan Hardy (Emmy-nominated actor Kevin Bacon, X-Men: First Class) to consult on the case. Having since withdrawn from the public eye, Hardy was responsible for Carroll's capture nine years ago, after Carroll murdered 14 female students on the Virginia college campus where he taught literature. The FBI's investigation leads Hardy to Claire Matthews (Natalie Zea, Justified), Carroll's ex-wife and mother of the criminal's 10-year-old son, Joey (newcomer Kyle Catlett). Close during Hardy's initial investigation, Hardy turns to Claire for insight into Carroll's next move. The tension rises when Carroll's accomplices kidnap his intended last victim from nine years ago. Hardy becomes ever more determined to end Carroll's game when he realizes that this psychopath intends to finish what he started. The thriller will follow Hardy and the FBI as they are challenged with the ever-growing web of murder around them, masterminded by the devious Carroll, who dreams of writing a novel with Hardy as his protagonist.
