The Centro Region is a region in central Portugal. The cities with major administrative status inside this region are Coimbra, Aveiro, Viseu, Leiria, Castelo Branco, Covilhã and Guarda. It is one of the seven Regions of Portugal . It is also one of the regions of Europe, as given by the European Union for statistical and geographical purposes. Its area totals 28,462 km2 . As of 2011, its population totalled 2,327,026 inhabitants, with a population density of 82 inhabitants per square kilometre.

    The Berlengas archipelago is a group of small islands 10 to 15 kilometres off the Portuguese coast, west of the town of Peniche in Oeste region. These islands were traditionally known to British mariners as the Burlings. The only habitable island is the largest island, Berlenga Grande, although there is no permanent habitation there at present. The other islands are grouped into two groups of islets, the Estelas Islets and the Farilhões-Forcados Islets.

    The Praia do Norte is a Portuguese beach located in Nazaré, Portugal, which due to its great conditions of surfing and its giant breaking waves was listed on the Guinness Book of Records for the biggest waves ever surfed. Praia do Norte’s very high breaking waves form due to the presence of the underwater Nazaré Canyon. The canyon creates constructive interference between incoming swell waves which tends to make the waves much larger. In November 2011, surfer Garrett McNamara, who resides in Hawai'i, surfed a record-breaking giant wave: 78 feet from trough to crest, at Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal.     The Lagoa de Óbidos is a lagoon that extends between the municipalities of Óbidos and Caldas da Rainha, in the Oeste subregion of Portugal. It is situated in a shallow depression, defined by unstable irregular contours close to the sea; it is a natural barrier that separate the Atlantic Ocean and marine biome from the river ecosystem of Foz do Arelho formed by lateral dunes. Its connection to the sea is made across an intermittent channel, whose transitional zone that requires timely interventions to maintain its access.
