Chemnitz , known from 1953 to 1990 as Karl-Marx-Stadt, is the third-largest city in the Free State of Saxony, Germany. Chemnitz is an independent city which is not part of any county and seat of the Landesdirektion Sachsen. Located in the northern foothills of the Ore Mountains, it is part of the Central German Metropolitan Region. The city's economy is based on the service sector and manufacturing industry. Chemnitz University of Technology has around 10,000 students.

  • 1. Karl-Marx-Monument Chemnitz
    The Karl Marx Monument is a 7.10m-tall stylized head of Karl Marx in Chemnitz, Germany. The heavy-duty sculpture, together with the base platform, stand over 13 meters tall and weights approximately 40 tonnes. On a wall just behind the monument, the phrase Workers of the world, unite! is inscripted in four languages: German, English, French and Russian. It is the most famous monument in the inner city of Chemnitz and the second-largest bust in the world, after the 60 cm higher Lenin's head in Ulan-Ude, Russia. There is a well known local nickname for the monument: Nischel, which is derived from the Central German term for head or skull.

    The Saxon Railway Museum is located in Chemnitz, in the state of Saxony, eastern Germany. It is situated on the site of the former locomotive depot for goods train locomotives in the district Hilbersdorf. After the locomotive depot was closed in 1992, the society moved into the buildings which were protected as historical monuments. As a result, the museum has two roundhouses with 20-metre turntables.     The Botanischer Garten Chemnitz is a municipal botanical garden located at Leipziger Straße 147, Chemnitz, Saxony, Germany. It is open daily without charge. The garden was founded in 1898 on a 1-hectare site, and extended in 1933 with an additional 1.75 hectares of orchards. It was badly damaged during World War II, and reconstructed during the 1950s. Today's garden was organized in 1996, with new greenhouses built in 1998 and 2002. The garden contains a number of outdoor areas in which Central European habitats are replicated, including heath, dune, steppe, moors, and ponds, as well as 20 different forest communities.
