Fanning Springs State Park is a Florida State Park, located on US 19/98 in the town of Fanning Springs. It contains one of the state's 33 first magnitude springs.As of 2008, decreased water emission levels at the springs technically requalify the first magnitude status as historical first magnitude. Located on the Suwannee River, this inviting source of cool, clear water has attracted people for thousands of years. Fanning Springs now produces less than 65 million gallons of water daily, making it a second magnitude spring. Historically, Fanning Spring was a first-magnitude springs as recently as the 1990s.

We tag along with the “Save The Manatee” experts that show us how they track, save and count these sea cows. Save the Manatee Club was founded in 1981 by Bob Graham, former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator, and singer/songwriter Jimmy Buffett. The Club was started with the mission to protect manatees and their habitat. Today, Save the Manatee Club is the world’s leading manatee conservation organization.
BLUE SPRING STATE PARK
Conservation measures can produce astounding results. In 1970, two years before Blue Spring State Park was established, researchers tracked 14 manatees in the spring run. By 2005, after years of park improvements and manatee protection efforts, wintering manatee numbers exceeded 200. By 2018, that number skyrocketed to a record 485.
Besides sea cows, fish abound in the spring run, and these attract a variety of wading birds, ospreys, eagles and kingfishers. To see the park’s wonders, one can hike along the spring run or on the 4.5-mile Pine Island Trail. One can also launch a canoe or kayak, rent one at the park or take a guided river boat cruise.

Scenic US 301 through Florida: Micanopy, Ocala, Wildwood
Scenic US 301 provides a great alternative to Interstate 75 through central Florida. I took this route on Scenic US 301 on my way back to Tampa, in search of some antique stores. There are plenty of antique stores, and a lot of great rolling farmland along Scenic US 301.
This drive begins on Interstate 75 on the outskirts of Gainesville. I exited the interstate at Micanopy, checked out this quaint small town, then joined US 441 for the drive down to Scenic US 301, which took me on to Ocala and Wildwood, Florida.
I made this trip in October 2018.

Florida Travel: Go Cave Diving at Peacock Springs
Located 16 miles southwest of Live Oak, Wes Skiles Peacock Springs State Park is home to two major springs, a spring run and six sinkholes, all in near pristine condition. Cave divers travel from all over the world to explore nearly 33,000 feet of surveyed underwater passages at Peacock Springs. This park features one of the longest underwater cave systems in the continental United States.

**ABOUT**
Blue Spring State Park is a state park located west of Orange City, Florida in the United States. The park is a popular tourist destination; available activities include canoeing, SCUBA diving, kayaking, fishing, camping, hiking, wildlife watching, and swimming. The spring is the largest on the St. Johns River and with a relatively warm temperature of 73°, the spring attracts many Florida manatees during the winter months.
The spring and surrounding land was acquired by the Weismore family in the mid-19th century and a large plantation-style home built upon a shell mound on the property. The area seemed to be excellent for cultivation of citrus fruit, and a small railway was built linking Orange City to the dock at Blue Spring. Ultimately, the Florida East Coast Railway was constructed not far from the present-day park. A killing freeze occurred in the 1890s, wiping out area citrus groves and driving the industry south. The Thursbys switched to the tourist trade, taking advantage of the beautiful spring and excellent fishing and hunting opportunities along the St. Johns River.
The park was acquired by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in 1972 to kick-start its manatee protection program.
