The Division as constituted prior to 2015 covered an area of 31,051 km2, and had a population of 47,424,418 at the 2011 Census. However, following the separation of the new Mymensingh Division in 2015, the area has been reduced to 20,508.8 km2 with a population at the 2011 Census of 36,433,505.     The Jamuna River is one of the three main rivers of Bangladesh. It is the main distributary channel of the Brahmaputra River as it flows from India to Bangladesh. The Jamuna flows south and joins the Padma River , near Goalundo Ghat, before meeting the Meghna River near Chandpur. It then flows into the Bay of Bengal as the Meghna River. It is the National river of Bangladesh.The Brahmaputra-Jamuna is a classic example of a braided river and is highly susceptible to channel migration and avulsion.
