1. Mount Desert Island Bar Harbor
Mount Desert Island in Hancock County, Maine, is the largest island off the coast of Maine. With an area of 108 square miles it is the 52nd-largest island in the contiguous United States, and it is the second-largest island on the Eastern seaboard, behind Long Island and ahead of Martha's Vineyard. According to the 2010 census, the island has a year-round population of 10,615, and it is estimated that two and a half million tourists a year visit Acadia National Park on the island. The island is home to numerous well known summer colonies such as Northeast Harbor and Bar Harbor.

3. Quoddy Head State Park Lubec
West Quoddy Head, in Quoddy Head State Park, Lubec, Maine, is the easternmost point of the contiguous United States. Since 1808, there has been a lighthouse there to guide ships through the Quoddy Narrows. The current one, with distinctive red-and-white stripes, was built in 1858, and is an active aid to navigation. Photographs and paintings of this lighthouse are frequently reproduced. The 3rd order Fresnel lens is the only 3rd order and one of only eight Fresnel lenses still in use on the Maine Coast.The light station was added to the National Register of Historic Places as West Quoddy Head Light Station on July 4, 1980.

The Asticou Azalea Garden in Northeast Harbor, Maine, United States, is a popular visitor attraction. It was created by lifelong resident of the village, Charles Kenneth Savage, in 1956. Savage also created Reef Point Estate in nearby Bar Harbor. It was from Reef Point that several specimens, with the financial assistance of John D. Rockefeller, Jr., were moved, including the weeping hemlock, just north of the main bridge. 14. Carriage Roads Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park, located on Mount Desert Island off the coast of the U.S. state of Maine, was created in part by land and other donations by John D. Rockefeller Jr. Between 1919 and 1931, Rockefeller, who was opposed to the introduction of automobiles on the island, personally oversaw the construction of a network of carriage roads, closed to motorized vehicles, on the eastern half of the island, including sixteen granite bridges and two gatehouses. The major portion of this network now falls within the bounds of the national park, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Meet Schoodic Woods: The Newest Addition to Acadia National Park

When most park visitors think of Acadia National Park, images of exploring Mount Desert Island come to mind. While the vast majority of the park’s lands are located on this scenic island, the Schoodic Woods section of the park, with its newly renovated campgrounds, stunning 10k carriage road loop, and 13k of bike paths, offers a peaceful, quiet, and less touristy experience then mainland Acadia. The park’s many islands, home to much of Maine’s unique and diverse wildlife, are able to be seen from Schoodic Point, one of the most scenic spots on the peninsula. Easily accessed via Area Cove Road, watching a sunset from Schoodic point is an experience you do not want to miss.

Thanks, in-part to a donation of 1,400 acres to the National Park Service in Acadia last year, this wondrous addition has allowed the park to grow in a time where visitation is at an all-time low; and not slowing down.

There are an abundance of ways to explore the Schoodic Woods section of the park. Whether on foot, bike, car, or even kayak, this area is accessible to every type of explorer. Keep in mind that the greater portion of the Loop Road is one way to vehicles and the maximum speed limit throughout Acadia National Park is 35 miles per hour, so remember to be careful and respectful of other park visitors. Bicyclists are also subject to the one-way road signs, but worry not if you find yourself out of steam and stranded, in need of a lift back. The park’s many explorer busses are equipped with bike racks and will be happy to give you a free lift to wherever you’re looking to go.

The Schoodic campground is located just over a mile south of winter harbor and is no more than an hour from Bar Harbor, so don’t worry about missing out on all your favorite shops and restaurants; they’re not going anywhere! Feel free to enjoy the Schoodic Peninsula’s impossible to overstate views of forested islands, historic lighthouses, and native seabirds. The Schoodic area also offers a selection of easy and moderate trails, perfect for the casual explorer. Sorry thrill seekers, the Schoodic trails are unlikely to push you to your limit. And as always, the park is pet friendly, so don’t forget to bring your four-legged member of the family along for the trip!
