Griffis Sculpture Park Ashford Hollow, NY, Amazing Art in Natural Setting
A walk around unique park on beautiful Summer day
Griffis Sculpture Park in Ashford Hollow, New York was the dream of Larry Griffis, Jr over 50 years ago. His youngest son Simon P. Griffis was the director of the park for over 10 years, and carried on the legacy. The granddaughter of Larry Griffis Jr., Nila Griffis Lampan is now the director of the foundation. Larry was always an artist, according to the foundation records, and he made it his mission to create a haven for imagination and play for his fellow neighbors to enjoy. His artistic devotion came later in life after his global travels. Griffis Sculpture park was the canvas for his artistic endeavors. Today, under his granddaughter's tutelage, Griffis Sculpture park has been rejuvenated and continues to meet the artistic mission, by providing visual arts, performing arts and education for the community.
Official Mario Batali™ Greenwich Village Food Tour - Walks Of New York
Official Mario Batali™ Greenwich Village Food Tour with Walks Of New York.
Taste the best of the best in Greenwich Village
At the centre of New York’s culinary scene, Greenwich Village provides the perfect setting for our tour. The Village has been home to chef Batali for 20 years now and remains a great place in Manhattan to find quality, locally sourced produce – the focus of our tour.
Along the way, you'll learn a little of this history of this beautiful neighborhood, while being steeped in chef Batali's food ideology and Italian approach to cooking. Learn how to choose the best products and create great meals in your own kitchen. Your guide will take you to some of the area’s top food sellers, pointing out the best places to shop as you pass them.
At Florence Meat you’ll once again sample fantastic Italian produce, just like in the home country. Then it's time for a slice of New York City’s best pizza at John's Pizza, and on to another of our favorite Italian haunts, Pagani. Here you’ll sample fantastic Italian olive oils, meats and a dish you won’t see on most menus – lemon pasta, made with flour and lemon juice rather than water.
Tastebuds and stomachs satisfied, we’ll finish our Greenwich Village food tour with a refreshing New York take on a favorite Italian dessert – gelato at Popbar.
An intimate day with an expert foodie
To keep our New York food tours authentic and to offer you the best experience possible, we’ve hired only the best New York foodies to lead this tour. Your experience will be led by a local as passionate about food as Batali himself – but also well-versed on the history of the area, so you’ll learn a lot as you eat and explore.
Traveling in small groups of only 15 people or fewer, the perfect group size to sit at a table together, you’ll find it easy to interact with your guide. You’ll also have plenty of time to chat with your fellow foodies, so your experience will be more like a lingering lunch with friends than a traditional group tour. We promised you an Italian meal after all, and no Italian meal is complete without great conversation.

Pyongyang: The standard view of propaganda in North Korea sees it as based on the Juche ideology and on the promotion of the Workers Party of Korea. The first syllable, ju, means the main or fundamental principle; the second syllable, che, means body or self or the foundation of something — the same as the Chinese word ti in the famous phrase, Chinese learning for the foundation and European learning for application. Article 3 of the Socialist Constitution proclaims, The DPRK is guided in its activities by the Juche idea, a world out-look centered on people, a revolutionary ideology for achieving the independence of the masses of people. Many pictures of the national leaders are posted throughout the country. North Korea, officially the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK or DPR Korea) (Korean: 조선민주주의인민공화국, Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia constituting the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, with Pyongyang the capital and the largest city in the country. The name Korea is derived from Goguryeo which was one of the great powers in East Asia during its time, ruling most of the Korean Peninsula, Manchuria, parts of the Russian Far East and Inner Mongolia, under Gwanggaeto the Great. To the north and northwest, the country is bordered by China and by Russia along the Amnok (known as the Yalu in Chinese) and Tumen rivers; it is bordered to the south by South Korea, with the heavily fortified Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two. Nevertheless, North Korea, like its southern counterpart, claims to be the legitimate government of the entire peninsula and adjacent islands. In 1910, Korea was annexed by Imperial Japan. After the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones, with the north occupied by the Soviet Union and the south occupied by the United States. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948, separate governments were formed: the socialist Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea in the north, and the capitalist Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–1953). The Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, but no peace treaty was signed. North Korea officially describes itself as a self-reliant socialist state, and formally holds elections, though said elections have been described by outside observers as sham elections. Outside observers also generally view North Korea as a Stalinist totalitarian dictatorship, particularly noting the elaborate cult of personality around Kim Il-sung and his family. The Workers Party of Korea (WPK), led by a member of the ruling family, holds power in the state and leads the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland of which all political officers are required to be members. Juche, an ideology of national self-reliance, was introduced into the constitution in 1972. The means of production are owned by the state through state-run enterprises and collectivized farms. Most services such as healthcare, education, housing and food production are subsidized or state-funded. From 1994 to 1998, North Korea suffered a famine that resulted in the deaths of between 240,000 and 420,000 people, and the population continues to suffer malnutrition. North Korea follows Songun, or military-first policy. It is the country with the highest number of military and paramilitary personnel, with a total of 9,495,000 active, reserve and paramilitary personnel, or approximately 37% of its population. Its active duty army of 1.21 million is the fourth largest in the world, after China, the United States and India; consisting of 4.8% of its population. It possesses nuclear weapons. Chicago (Illinois) - In Another Minute (Week 237)
I've been fond of Chicago, Illinois, for a long time. One of my dearest friends from the film school days, Nick Rufca, is from around there. In 2011, I was invited to screen the Moving Postcard web series as part of a group art show at the S3 Gallery. (You can watch a 1-minute video about that experience: Scott and I spent a lovely weekend there in 2006, after filming in Illinois for our documentary All God's Children ( But the trip this week is what will seal this city in my heart forever as one of my very special happy places.
My father, Günter Westphal, a social artist and photographer from Hamburg, Germany, was nominated and then selected for a month-long art residency; and I got to join him for his first few days in the Windy City. It was absolutely amazing!
Sharing one of my favorite activities (exploring a new place with my camera and someone I love) with my dad brought me ultimate and long-lasting happiness. As neither of us could stop gushing about all that we saw and pointing our camera almost obsessively (and often at the same subjects), I knew more than ever that I'm my father's daughter.
Helping him navigate the city and American culture and language, I felt so grateful for the privilege of supporting my awesome dad. Tagging along to events where we met other fascinating artists, people from the Goethe Institute and even the German consul to 13 US states, I was overwhelmed with pride of my dad and his curiosity, thoughtfulness, social and creative work and his courage.
On a side note, I also was delirious with the buzz of being back in a real city - with all its inspiration, energy, interesting people and conversations and the opportunity to shoot lots and lots of photos and videos.
If you're in Chicago, my father will give a presentation about his social art work on Saturday, November 22, at 5pm at the Experimental Station (6100 South Blackstone Ave - Scott and I will be there as well... and maybe even Whiskey...
In this video, you can see the West Loop neighborhood, where my dad is staying, some street art, the L train looping through downtown Chicago (Loop neighborhood), my dad posing for photos in his Münzviertel shirt (the Hamburg neighborhood where he does most of his social art work) at the Randolph/Wabash train station, the Cloud Gate (if you look closely, you can see us hugging in the reflection) and a few more shots from that corner of Chicago.
Special thanks to Rebecca Beechy, a social and visual artist in Chicago, who was one of the two artists chosen for the Hamburg portion of the Chicago-Hamburg artist exchange last year, and who has been such a great host to both my dad and myself.
