    In Icelandic folklore, the Lagarfljótsormur or Lagarfljót worm is an Icelandic lake monster purported to live in Lagarfljót, a lake by the town of Egilsstaðir. Sightings have been logged since 1345 and continue into the 21st century, including a 2012 video supposedly showing the creature swimming. An origin of the creature is given in Jón Árnason's collection of Icelandic folktales and legends published in 1862.

    Jökulsárlón is a large glacial lake in southeast Iceland, on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park. Situated at the head of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, it developed into a lake after the glacier started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The lake has grown since then at varying rates because of melting of the glaciers. It is now 1.5 km away from the ocean's edge and covers an area of about 18 km2 . In 2009 it was reported to be the deepest lake in Iceland, at over 248 m , as glacial retreat extended its boundaries. The size of the lake has increased fourfold since the 1970s.     Mývatn is a shallow eutrophic lake situated in an area of active volcanism in the north of Iceland, not far from Krafla volcano. The lake and its surrounding wetlands have an exceptionally rich fauna of waterbirds, especially ducks. The lake was created by a large basaltic lava eruption 2300 years ago, and the surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic landforms, including lava pillars and rootless vents . The effluent river Laxá is known for its rich fishing for brown trout and Atlantic salmon. The name of the lake comes from the huge numbers of midges to be found there in the summer. The name Mývatn is sometimes used not only for the lake but the whole surrounding inhabited area.
