Ellicott City MD On a Saturday Night (December 22 2018)
NOTE: It's with a heavy heart that I post this, as my mother passed away at age 96 on December 28. Also, I was in the process of preparing a year-end video with some clips and photos of places I took you in 2018, but there may be a delay before its completion. This video was made before Mom's passing. Mom never got to see Ellicott City in person, something I regret. She'd have loved it. OK-let's get to the video...
A perfect Saturday night in Ellicott City! We take our usual walk up and down Main Street (aka National Pike) and stop to talk to some merchants along the way. Sadly-Barry, our bubble man, hasn't yet come back, but he assured me he would.
After revisiting the lady with the cute little dog we then visit a place I have a great passion for-an actual RECORD store selling nothing but good old-fashioned vinyl records!! They carry some cassettes too, but as of yet, no 8-track tapes. Being I grew up in stores like this, it was a very sentimental visit for me, complete with turntable and Marantz receiver (anybody remember Marantz??). Still got my vinyl...over 300 of 'em, along with a stack of 45s.
We continue west to the upper end of the historic district, where flood control is still going on, before crossing the street and heading back east. And, we revisit Taylor's, another place that brings back memories for me of the original department stores in downtown Baltimore. My mother would take me to those stores when I was kid; hence the memories.
I was informed that flood control is going fine, but the future of the buildings from Caplan's east is still in question. No demolition yet, but some fear that those undermined foundations might cause structural collapse should there be a heavy enough snowfall. Oddly enough, the Phoenix Emporium, in the path of the demolition, appears to be doing a great business.
So-join us for this holiday walk through EC! A bit chilly, but we'll warm you up! Nice lights too! Please enjoy, as I might have to take a bit of a bereavement break after I finish a couple current video projects. Fear not; the Day Odyssey Series will continue soon as I'm able.

Driving Scenic Route 11 in Shenandoah Valley Virginia
Driving I-81 at exit 257, and followed Rt. 11 north through New Market, Mt. Jackson, and stopped filming in Woodstock (all VA). Large sections of Rt. 11 are considered a scenic byway but think Rt. 40. Before the interstate, this was the highway, so there's some sprawl in little towns and sections of it run right through Staunton, Harrisonburg and Roanoke, making it very congested decidedly non-scenic. This part above (check out the google map of the area) runs right along this big mountain ridge so it's lovely.

In traditional belief and fiction, a ghost is a manifestation of the spirit or soul of a person. Alternative theories expand on that idea and include belief in the ghosts of deceased animals. Sometimes the term ghost is used synonymously with any spirit or demon, however in popular usage the term typically refers to a deceased person's spirit.
The belief in ghosts as souls of the departed is closely tied to the concept of animism, an ancient belief which attributed souls to everything in nature. As the 19th-century anthropologist George Frazer explained in his classic work, The Golden Bough, souls were seen as the creature within that animated the body. Although the human soul was sometimes symbolically or literally depicted in ancient cultures as a bird or other animal, it was widely held that the soul was an exact reproduction of the body in every feature, even down to clothing the person wore. This is depicted in artwork from various ancient cultures, including such works as the Egyptian Book of the Dead, which shows deceased people in the afterlife appearing much as they did before death, including the style of dress.

Baltimore is a major city in Maryland with a long history as an important seaport. Fort McHenry, birthplace of the U.S. national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” sits at the mouth of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Today, this harbor area offers shops, upscale crab shacks and attractions like the Civil War–era warship the USS Constellation and the National Aquarium, showcasing thousands of marine creatures.
Baltimore is a popular tourist destination in Maryland, in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States of America, near Washington, D.C. It is perhaps most famously known historically as the city where Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics for the Star Spangled Banner during the Battle of Baltimore of the War of 1812. Today it has become a major center for tourism and travel. Local highlights include excellent seafood (steamed blue crabs, raw oysters, Maryland crab cakes, and Maryland crab soup) and Camden Yards (the first retro major league ball park and where the Baltimore Orioles play). Baltimore possesses a vibrant arts scene with the largest free arts festival in the US (Artscape) occurring annually in July, a renowned arts museum American Visionary Arts Museum that is dedicated to outsider art, and the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins. Baltimore has an absolutely staggering number of officially designated neighborhoods, Inner Harbor, If you are a tourist, you come here. Fells Point could not be more complementary to the Inner Harbor—historic. An incongruous mix of Baltimore's central business district, the University of Maryland-Baltimore, the awe inspiring Lexington Market, the infamously seedy Block, and the Bromo Arts District.
One of the nicest sections of the city, home to the performing arts district, Penn Station, and a host of other attractions (Walters Art Museum, the original Washington Monument, dining and wining on Charles St, the University of Baltimore, Station North Arts District etc.) that most visitors foolishly pass over. South Baltimore
Industrial blue-collar South Baltimore is dying, and is quickly being replaced with upscale gentrified neighborhoods like Federal Hill.
Most visitors to the area know only Johns Hopkins University and the always interesting commercial strip along Charles St nearby. But it is unfortunate that they overlook the quirkiest of quirky neighborhoods, Hampden. Infamous West Baltimore. If you have watched the Wire, this was where the crime was taking place! But don't be fooled. There are some major tourist draws here, like the Maryland Zoo in Druid Hill Park, Pimlico Racecourse, and Edgar Allen Poe's House.Baltimore's great rivalry between east and west is certainly an example of the narcissism of small differences. Attractions in the east are very few and far between, but things are changing fast as booming Johns Hopkins Medical Campus expands and demolishes in its wake.
