It borders the regions of West Macedonia and Thessaly to the east, West Greece to the south, the Ionian Sea and Ionian Islands to the west and Albania to the north. The region has an area of about 9,200 km2 . It is part of the wider historical region of Epirus, which overlaps modern Albania and Greece but lies mostly within Greek territory.

    Ali Pasha , variously referred to as of Tepelena or of Janina/Yannina/Ioannina, or the Lion of Yannina, was an Ottoman Albanian ruler who served as pasha of a large part of western Rumelia, the Ottoman Empire's European territories, which was referred to as the Pashalik of Yanina. His court was in Ioannina, and the territory he governed incorporated most of Epirus and the western parts of Thessaly and Greek Macedonia.     The Archaeological Museum of Arta is a museum in Arta, Greece. It was established in 1973 as the Archaeological collection of Arta, and used to be housed in the 13th-century Paregoretissa church.     The Municipal Ethnographic Museum of Ioannina is a museum in Ioannina, Greece. It is housed in the Aslan Pasha Mosque, also known as the Mosque of Ali Pasha, in the Ioannina Castle since 1933. The Mosque was built in 1618 and in 1993 it was renovated to its present form. Its permanent exhibition includes pottery, pictures, and other traditional decorative items, as well as jewelry, textiles, hand-weapons, wood-carved pieces of furniture and several personal objects that belonged to historical personalities. There are also early photographs and paintings related to the liberation of the city of Ioannina. Additionally the museum hosts exhibitions on historical topics as well as collections of art.
