The Marksburg is a castle above the town of Braubach in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is one of the principal sites of the Rhine Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress was used for protection rather than as a residence for royal families. It has a striking example of a bergfried designed as a butter-churn tower. Of the 40 hill castles between Bingen am Rhein and Koblenz the Marksburg was the only one which was never destroyed.

5. Rheinfels Castle Sankt Goar
Rheinfels Castle is a castle ruin located above the left bank of the Rhine in Sankt Goar, Germany. It was started in 1245 by Count Diether V of Katzenelnbogen. After expansions, it was the largest fortress in the Middle Rhein Valley between Koblenz and Mainz. It was slighted by French Revolutionary Army troops in 1797. It is the largest castle overlooking the Rhine, and historically covered five times its current area. While much of the castle is a ruin, some of the outer buildings are now a luxury hotel, wellness centre and restaurant. There is also a museum within some of the better preserved structures.

The Edersee Dam is a hydroelectric dam spanning the Eder river in northern Hesse, Germany. Constructed between 1908 and 1914, it lies near the small town of Waldeck at the northern edge of the Kellerwald. Breached by Allied bombs during World War II, it was rebuilt during the war, and today generates hydroelectric power and regulates water levels for shipping on the Weser river. At low water in late summers of dry years the remnants of three villages and a bridge across the original river bed submerged when the lake was filled in 1914 can be seen. Descendants of those buried there go to visit the graves of their ancestors.

The Memoirs of Glückel of Hameln provide an intimate portrait of German-Jewish life in the late seventeenth to early eighteenth centuries and have become an important source for historians, philologists, sociologists, literary critics, and linguists.

The Externsteine [ˈɛkstɐnʃtaɪnə] is a distinctive sandstone rock formation located in the Teutoburg Forest, near the town of Horn-Bad Meinberg in the Lippe district of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The formation is a tor consisting of several tall, narrow columns of rock which rise abruptly from the surrounding wooded hills. In a popular tradition going back to an idea proposed to Hermann Hamelmann in 1564, the Externsteine are identified as a sacred site of the pagan Saxons, and the location of the Irminsul idol reportedly destroyed by Charlemagne; there is however no archaeological evidence that would confirm the site's use during the relevant period. Der Druidenstein bei Kirchen (Sieg) HD - Von Klaus Christ

Am Westrand des Windhahn-Höhenzugs liegt Herkersdorf, ein Stadtteil von Kirchen an der Sieg. Bekannt ist Herkersdorf vor allem durch den Druidenstein (431m), einem sagenumwobenen Basaltkegel, der 2006 als eines von 77 National-Geotopen in Deutschland ausgezeichnet wurde.
Die besondere Form machte den Druidenstein schon in vorchristlicher Zeit zu einer kultischen Stätte. Hier errichteten Chatten einen Thingplatz und die heimische Sagenwelt berichtet von einer Druidin namens Herke, die hier einst geopfert wurde, weil sie ihre druidische Keuschheit hingab. Dieser Sage um Herke und ihren Liebhaber, der ebenfalls zu Tode kam, verdankt Herkersdorf übrigens möglicherweise seinen Namen.

Der Druidenstein ist bereits seit 1869 geschützt, was ihn davor bewahrte, als günstiger Steinbruch abgetragen zu werden. In den 1920er Jahren errichteten die Herkersdorfer einen Kreuzweg vom Ort hinauf zum Druidenstein. Einzelne Stationen dieses Kreuzwegs sind mit wertvollen Erzstufen ausgeschmückt. An Himmelfahrt findet eine Prozession statt, die über den Kreuzweg zum Druidenstein führt.

In den 1950er Jahren diente der Druidenstein als Schauplatz für Theateraufführungen. Die Einnahmen aus den Veranstaltungen auf der Druidenstein-Freilichtbühne legten die Dorfbewohner 1960 im Bau der sehenswerten Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche in Herkersdorf an.
