Ferno is a comune in the Province of Varese in the Italian region Lombardy, located about 40 km northwest of Milan and about 35 km south of Varese. As of 31 December 2017, it had a population of 6,858 and an area of 8.5 km².The municipality of Ferno contains the frazione San Macario. Ferno borders the following municipalities: Lonate Pozzolo, Samarate, Somma Lombardo, Vizzola Ticino. It is served by Ferno-Lonate Pozzolo railway station. Volare Group SpA once had its head office in Area Tecnica Sud of Terminal 1 of Milan Malpensa Airport in Ferno.

Lake Orta is a lake in northern Italy, west of Lake Maggiore. It has been so named since the 16th century, but was previously called the Lago di San Giulio, after Saint Julius , the patron saint of the region. Its southern end is about 35 kilometres by rail, to the northwest of Novara on the main Turin-Milan line, while its north end is about 6 kilometres by rail south of the Gravellona-Toce railway station, halfway between Ornavasso and Omegna. Its scenery is characteristically Italian, while the San Giulio island has some very picturesque buildings, and takes its name from the local saint, who lived in the 4th century. Milan Malpensa, MXP, Italy: Approach Rwy 35R with swingover 35L, start over the alps. Cockpitview

This approach to Milan Malpensa airport ( MXP / LIMC ) runway 35L was very special: We arrived from the north side of the alps and the approach started over the snow covered alps with nice views of Lake Maggiore on the south side of the alps. Produced in 4k. With ATC (air traffic control) audio and ATIS (automatic terminal information service) audio.

As we started the approach, runway 35R was in use for landing. This was confirmed by the ATIS transmission. You can hear the transmission at the beginning of this video.

On the turn to the final approach, we had been cleared for the ILS approach (instrument landing system) to runway 35R. After a while, approach control handed us over to tower. At about 6 nautical miles prior landing (21:35 in the video), tower asked us, if we would like to swing over to a visual approach for the parallel runway 35L.

We do not know why he offered us this opportunity. But we gladly accepted the visual approach. It shortened our taxi time to the parking position and it is much more fun to fly for us pilots. Tower also gave us instructions what to do in case of a missed approach.

Milan Malpensa airport serves the Milan area in italy and parts of Switzerland near Lake Maggiore. It is located near the city of Ferno. The distance to Milan city is about 49 kilometers or 30 miles. Since the year 1910 there have been aviation activities at the site of MXP airport. There is an additional airport: Milan Linate airport. It is much closer to the city of Milan, but the capacity is very limited.

Milan Malpensa aiport offers runways 35L/17R and 35R/17L. The runways are 3920 meters long. This is long enough for any airplane in the world which is doing commercial passenger or cargo transport. Almost every time runway 35L or 35R are in use. Runways 17L and 17R are only used, if the tail wind component does not allow to use 35R and 35L. This is very rare. And if runways 17L and 17R are in use, the operation gets more complicated: Because of the high elevation of the alps, even the approaches from the north to runways 17R and 17L first overfly the airport to the north before turning to the final approach. This extends the flights to MXP by several minutes.
