By land, it borders Troms county to the west, Finland to the south, and Russia to the east, and by water, the Norwegian Sea to the northwest, and the Barents Sea to the north and northeast.     The World Heritage Rock Art Centre - Alta Museum is located at Alta in Finnmark, Norway. Norway.World Heritage Rock Art - Alta Museum is situated in Hjemmeluft, a small bay on Altafjord near the Arctic Circle. Alta Museum is northern Norway's most-visited summer museum, with more than 1,000 visitors each day. It presents exhibitions on local culture and historic industries including the nearby prehistoric rock carvings that form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Alta Museum is situated at the site of early settlement of Finnmark dating from around 11,000 years ago. In 1973, the first rock carvings in Hjemmeluft were found. To date over 3,000 figures have been registered here. The museum opened in June 1991 and won the European Museum of the Year Award in 1993.

    Hornøya is a small, uninhabited island in Vardø Municipality in Finnmark county, Norway. It lies in the Barents Sea, just east of the larger island of Vardøya where the town of Vardø is located. Vardø Lighthouse is the only man-made object on the 0.4-square-kilometre island. The lighthouse sits at the highest point of the island, at an elevation of 65 metres above sea level, and it protects the shipping lanes around the town of Vardø. The island is the easternmost point of Norway proper.

The 39-metre lighthouse is the only cast iron lighthouse in Finnmark county.This is the easternmost of the three Nordkapp area lighthouses, and it is often considered the North Cape Light, marking the top of Europe. Fruholmen Lighthouse is located about 500 metres farther north, on the island of Ingøya, but the Slettnes Lighthouse is the northernmost lighthouse on the mainland of Scandinavia.
