As of the 2010 census, the city population was 62,298 and in 2017 was estimated at 79,943.Fort Myers is a gateway to the Southwest Florida region and a major tourist destination within Florida. The winter estates of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford are major attractions. The city is named after Colonel Abraham Myers.

Located on 105 acres, the Center includes a natural history museum with live native and teaching animals, and exhibits about the animals, plants and environment of Southwest Florida. There are three nature trails, a planetarium, butterfly house, and a bird aviary with rehabilitated birds of prey. There is also a gift shop, and meeting and picnic areas.
