Franklinton is a town in and the parish seat of Washington Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 3,657 at the 2000 census. The elevation is an average of 155 feet above sea level. Located 61 miles north of New Orleans, the town's name is pronounced locally as Frank-lin-ton. Franklinton is part of the Bogalusa Micropolitan Statistical Area. A Franklinton physician, Jerry Thomas, represented Washington Parish in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1988–1999.     Bogue Chitto State Park is a recent addition to the Louisiana State Park system. It opened to the public on August 28, 2010, after a delay of approximately three months.The state park is located off Louisiana State Highway 25 south of Franklinton, in Washington Parish. The name Bogue Chitto is from the Choctaw language, bok chito, meaning big creek.Bogue Chitto State Park has a visitors center, a conference room, picnic pavilions, and a lodge overlooking a 90-foot bluff. Guests may stay at one of four upland cabins or park among the 81 recreational-vehicle sites. A group camp may be reserved for overnight visitors, as well.
