Fuvahmulah City is an island in the Maldives. It is under Maldives administrative divisions of Gnaviyani Atoll or Nyaviyani Atoll. The inhabitants speak a distinctive form of the Dhivehi language, known as dhivehi bas. Fuvahmulah means Island of the Areca nut palms, Fuvah in the local language. Other places in the world like Penang in Malaysia and Guwahati in Assam, India, are also named after this nut. Located mainly in Maalegan ward of the island with a small part extending to Miskiymagu ward as well, the lake has an area of approximately 0.058 square kilometers and an average depth of 12 feet, which makes it the largest lake by volume in the Maldives accommodating the largest freshwater reserve in the country.
