Gunib , also spelled Ghunib, is a rural locality and the administrative center of Gunibsky District of the Republic of Dagestan, Russia. Population: 2,406 ; 2,405 .Gunib was historically important as a natural fortress during the Caucasian War of the 19th century. Imam Shamil, leader of the Chechen and Daghestani tribes, made his last stand against the Russians at Gunib, where he gave himself up to the Russian commander, Prince Alexander Baryatinsky, on August 25, 1859. Olga Forsh was born in Gunib in 1873.

    Gunibsky District is an administrative and municipal district , one of the forty-one in the Republic of Dagestan, Russia. It is located in the center of the republic. The area of the district is 609.5 square kilometers . Its administrative center is the rural locality of Gunib. As of the 2010 Census, the total population of the district was 25,303, with the population of Gunib accounting for 9.0% of that number.

  • 3. Lake Kezenoy-Am Chechnya
    Lake Kezenoy-am is the deepest lake in the Caucasus Mountains, mostly in Chechnya but partly in Dagestan in the Russian Federation. It goes through Andiyskiy Khrebet . It is situated at an altitude of 1870 m above sea level and fills an area of 2.4 km². The maximum depth of the lake is 74 m. In winter the surface of the lake freezes and in summer the water temperature is around 5 °C. The lake water has a year-round supply of oxygen in which plankton survive. Salmo ezenami, a rare species of trout, are native only to the lake; however, their population is threatened with extinction due to the introduction of European chubs which consume the fry of the Salmo.
