Hillsborough Township is a township in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 38,303, reflecting an increase of 1,669 from the 36,634 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 7,826 from the 28,808 counted in the 1990 Census.Hillsborough Township was originally created by Royal charter on September 12, 1771, from portions of Western precinct.     Ayr Mount is a Federal style plantation house located east of Hillsborough, in Orange County, North Carolina, the United States of America. In 1799, William Kirkland bought 500 acres east of Hillsborough. Circa 1815, he had a home built for himself, his wife, Margaret, and their children. The brick dwelling consists of a two-story, three bay main block flanked by one-story, two bay wings. It features a one-story, full width front porch added about 1894.The Kirkland family lived at Ayr Mount for four generations, with the last Kirkland, Mrs. Samuel Kirkland, residing at Ayr Mount until 1985. A member of the Democratic Party, he was an architect and champion of westward expansion by the United States, a cause that became known as Manifest Destiny. Benton served in the Senate from 1821 to 1851, becoming the first member of that body to serve five terms. Benton was born in Harts Mill, North Carolina. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, he established a law practice and plantation near Nashville, Tennessee.
