On the last day of our trip we visited Thames - the small town where I went to high school, then drove back to Auckland and said goodbye to our motorhome.
We were planning to visit the place where I grew up in Tapu Valley - but had to change our route because of the cyclone. So that's a story for another day.

Howick Village and Howick Beach - East Auckland - an historically conscious place
Howick is an eastern suburb of Auckland, forming part of what is sometimes called East Auckland. Due to the relatively numerous remaining heritage buildings and other historical remnants from its early European settlement past, it has been called perhaps Auckland's most historically conscious place.
Maori origins
The local iwi (Māori tribe) was the Ngai Tai people of Tainui descent. They had lived there for around 300 years with pa (fortified villages) at Ohuia Rangi (Pigeon Mountain), Te Waiarohia (Musick Point) and Tuwakamana (Cockle Bay).
Howick Village is a historic township known for the fencible or colony community that was settled by the British in the 1840s. The area is rich with history and houses New Zealand's second oldest church, All Saints Church, built in 1847 under the guidance of Bishop Selwyn. There is also an historical village where it is possible to experience costume, buildings and lifestyle from the fencible era.
The Emilia Maud Nixon Garden of Memories is a unique reserve situated in a garden setting on Uxbridge Road in Howick.The Garden was established by Emilia Maud Nixon (1870-1962) to promote goodwill between all peoples by fostering understanding of the early settlers, pioneer women and the traditions of Māori, particularly Ngai Tai. The facilities within the Garden of Memories include Emilia Maud Nixon's original home which is presently leased by the Howick Senior Citizens.

Howick Hall and Gardens | Northumberland Gardens
The gardens at Howick are deliberately aimed at garden lovers with the extensive grounds offering a wide variety of plants throughout the year and are open from early February until mid November.
The season starts in early February with the ’Snowdrop Festival’. In late March/April there are spectacular drifts of daffodils to be seen throughout the grounds. In April/May the Woodland Garden is particularly lovely with rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias, and the tulips also appear in the wild flower meadows in May. The formal gardens, including the herbaceous borders and terraces in front of the Hall, come into their own from June onwards. The Bog Garden lasts from June to September and is mostly planted with unusual herbaceous material grown from seed collected in the wild, which will be of particular interest to dedicated plantsmen. The late season brings brilliant autumn colour in late September through to mid November.
Howick Hall Gardens has been rated by the BBC Gardener’s World Magazine as one of the top 5 coastal gardens in the country and rated the Independent Magazine as ’one of the Best 10 Gardens to visit this spring’.

After 80 years, the Monterey Cinema located in the East Auckland (New Zealand) suburb of Howick, closed. This documents the final screening. I thought it was a good idea to take this short video off my library shelf and make it available for (hopefully) a wider audience. This item was originally filmed on Video 8 and transfered to DVD from which this upload is sourced from.
